So i will also point out the positive.
The first one is great because it has a nice even amount of tones with nothing really too contrasty. Theres good shadow detail and no highlights are blown out. The scene is peaceful and beautiful and shows the person in a comtemplative/peaceful state.
The second one is great for all the same reasons....but I also really like the use of wide angle to show this person in this vast scene. the horizon is to the top 3rd of the frame....and that's a great spot - a little island surrounded by water.
So yeah...I hope this helps a bit

| this seems like a cool thread so i guess i'll jump in...
i took this one two days ago. it's a self portrait. not my favorite i've done by a technical standpoint, yet it still makes me smile thinking of how stupid i probably looked taking it. (it was right next to my church parking lot. being a late sunday afternoon, there were a few people present.)
i kind of cheated by using layers in order to selectively adjust brightness/contrast/saturation. i also used dodging/burning. so if this isn't legal for this thread, let me know.
anyway here it is: |

the second and third pictures seem to be lacking in composition. it would help your composition a lot if your subjects were not centered. try using the rule of thirds more, as it will add a lot to the composition of your photos. the lighting in the second photo is good.
i like the idea behind the third photo, placing the older girl in the upper corner and the younger in the lower corner. this photo's downfall is the cropping. the composition would be much better if either a closer square crop was used, or if the photo was taken from further back. (further back may not have been good though, i'm not sure what the surroundings looked like.) also, if you have a dodging/burning utility it may be good to burn the bright plant in the center and slightly dodge the hilights in the girls faces. in my opinion, the plant is too bright and takes the focus off of the girls. cropping could also help to fix this problem.
i'm not a professional or anything, but i hope this helped!

| Cadence, I was playing around with one of your wedding shots ('cause I love to play with photos!) and came up with these. Hope you don't mind!
1): The originally posted version:
2): I played with the brightness on this one.
3): This one had colour, brightness, gamma, and contrast adjusted before I grayscaled it.
4): With this one, I adjusted the colour, brightness, gamma, and contrast;then mapped it with a negative mask. I think the effect is kinda cool.
I don't have much experience actually taking the pics, but do you think I might be good at editing them, if nothing else?
BTW, I absolutely LOVE the original. It's just plain GORGEOUS. I was just having fun. *grins*

| I'm with Godslilrosebud here, I didn't take these pictures, but I edited them as such. I'm obsessed with Black and White Pictures that have splashes of color.
Credit where credit is due: the leaves came from a picture that was in PaintShop Pro, the flower was taken origionally by Bobthecockroach, and the picture of Cathrine (Katsrus) was taken by Adam (WintryFrenchie).

If not, I'd suggest getting a new graphics editor, or downloading Gimp. You can see the compression artifacts in the image where the colours are similar. They look like large pixels. Also, when you brightened the image, it lost a lot of the richness of colour. I'd suggest tweaking the contrast as you brighten, and saving at a higher compression quality, or saving in a different format. Quote: |

| When it comes to black and white stuff, I think contrast important. When you brightened the image, you lost a lot of contrast within the gown alone. If you look at the original image, there are a lot of folds on the left (her right) that just got washed out, so it becomes less interesting. And there's still the matter of compression quality. Here's what I would do if I were making the image black and white. The first is just desaturating the image, and the second is with some selective brightness and contrast on the top right corner and down the bottom. Quote:

Oh, and anyone feel free to correct me. |

Oh, and in the first one, I can see (I think) what you've done. You've used two layers, up top is the coloured version, below it is the black and white version. You've then used the eraser to take away the colour. The reason I can tell (or think I can tell), is that you've missed a small fleck of colour beside the leaf second from the right. But other than those small errors, I don't know? |
