| I was accused of being a Yankee/Southern Rights/Slavery Debate I was at work yesterday and I don't know how it can up, but I was accused of "talking like a Yankee". This is two times in the three years I've lived here, in Mississippi. This is really starting to bother me. Some background. I was born in Jacksonville Florida in a very southern family. Rednecks if you will. Moved to Dallas Texas when I was 8. Now Texas is in the south but not like the deep south (Mississippi Georgia, the Carolinas ect). Most Texans have much less of an accent than the average person from the deep south, more so in larger cities like Dallas, Houston, or Austin. So I really never had much of an accent. Top that off with the fact that I try to speak as well as I can, that is, I actually perform subject verb agreement without thinking about it. So now I'm ostracized for being all uppity or a Yankee. No offense to anyone from north of the Mason-Dixon, but that's an insult down here. It reminds me of black kids who try to be articulate and get the same treatment from their friends, like, "what er you tryin to be, white or somethin"?
Both are wrong. What an absolutely stupid way of thinking. |

| It is fairly typical down here to refer to all Americans as Yankees. |

| I have never said the word "y'all" in my life. And I speak with articulate grammar. I have never been called a Yankee, and I am good friends with many people who are... Hillbilly types. Like, people that don't even know what an MP3 player is. They'll talk your ears off about their vehicles though.
Anyhow. I have never had problems with them thinking I am a Yankee. I mess around with them, and tell them they are slobs, and they tell me I am fancy. I love them, but we aren't the same, and we both know it. We don't care either. |

I am proud that my ancestors fought for the Confederate States of America against an enemy invader in the War of Northern Aggression, and I believe that the South was right.
I am a Texan and a Southerner before I am an American. But even before the former two, I am a Christian.
The line about killing Yankees is a joke (mostly ).
The girl I am dating is from Chicago, Illinois—"the land of Lincoln"—by the way. So I don’t hate all Northerners. |

| These type of arguments do lead to the stereotypes that pollute everything today. I am a redneck(not a hick, hillbilly, whitetrash, or any of that).
In modern usage, redneck predominantly refers to a particular stereotype of whites from the Southern United States. The word can be used either as a pejorative or as a matter of pride, depending on context.(THanks wikipedia)
I am a redneck through many generations because i come from a family rooted in agriculture. We are called rednecks because our necks are red.(being out in the Alabama sun will do that to you). I am proud of this fact because it hails back to a heritage that i am proud of. But in the defense of all Yankees, my father is from Ohio. He is a Yankee and will always be. From all my experiences people in the South are just as stereotypical in their thoughts of Northerns as the Yankees are of Rednecks
More Posts on this subject to come(from the redneck point of view ) |
