Actually, asking the girl doesn't always work
She might tell you she doesn't even if she does.

In which case you're better off cause it's likely she'd get in the habit of lying to you. Or else she's really not interested enough to pursue anything at the time.

I'm a girl, and I'm of the opinion that if a guy likes you enough, he'll get around to asking you out.
Now, it might make him nervous, and everything, but if he really wants you, he won't want anyone else to get you either so he'll eventually get the words out. If he doesn't, then he's not interested enoough to pursue anything serious right now.

I agree.

ETA: If you're gonna ask her, don't ask "do you like me?" coz that would be awkward for me to answer, so it probably would be for her too. Just go ahead and ask her to go out with you, to be your girlfriend, something more like that. Her answer will tell you if she likes you or not.
