The only part of Gatsby that my junior lit class enjoyed was Myrtle getting hit by the car. Horrible, I know.

I enjoyed Great Expectations. The structural symmetry, the development of the characters and its exploration of class distinctions made it a much more enjoyable read than A Tale Of Two Cities, for example.

However, I couldn't really get into Heart Of Darkness, probably because Conrad's style is so dense and I didn't devote enough time and energy into it. John Wyndam's The Chrysalids was almost a painful read, as well. The characters were saccharine and hardly beliveable, and the plot left a lot to be desired, especially with the ending (which was a really poor use of Deus Ex Machina).

Hmm...I remember liking that one. The Grapes of Wrath, however....I struggled with. I'm pretty sure I never finished it. I may try and go back and read it someday, though.

I enjoyed reading The Grapes of Wrath...it was just long. My copy was nearly 600 pages long.

Another boring book: The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. I was lost after about 20 pages.

I don't think it's a case of it being a bad book, it's just that I didn't put much time into actually reading it. I will have to go back and do that sometime soon.

To Kill A Mockingbird, though, is probably one of my favourite books, and has been since I was 12 or so.

Oddly enough, I usually enjoyed books I had to read for English class. The fact that we talked about the author, the history surrounding the book, the symbolism, and stuff like that always made me enjoy the books way more than I would have if I had just read them on my own.

That said, I was totally bored reading The Old Man and the Sea in school. And as far as books I've just read on my own, I couldn't get more than half way through Pride and Prejudice. It felt like only two things had happened in about 200 pages, and I also felt I could predict exactly how it was going to end.

There were plenty of good stories that I read in Lit class... they just weren't the ones that were assigned. Yes, I used to leaf through our Lit book and read some of the cooler-sounding stories, and they normally weren't assigned. The ones we had to read were usually dull and boring.

I also failed to get excited about 'Lord of the Flies.' I think our teacher just ruined most of the stories we read. Another was 'A Separate Peace.' It would have been good, had the teacher not tried to draw stupid parallels and just let us draw our own conclusions.

The Great Gatsby drove me insane last semester. I had to get through it, but it really bored me and I couldn't retain very much. This was unfortunate, because that was the work I ended up having to do an on-the-spot oral commentary on for my IB English oral...

Before that, it was Season of Migration to the North in my World Literature class. There was also my second run through Of Mice and Men in high school, but I think a lot of that had to do with the fact that I had changed schools, and the year before had spent a good month or two working through it... wasn't exactly willing to go over all of that again.

I had to read "Carry On, Mr. Bowditch" in 6th or 7th grade. I've never really healed.

Anything sci-fi bores you? Have you read any Ray Bradbury? His short stories are especially amazing.
