Derek Webb's teaching on the House show.

Hey,

anyone hear heard the teachings of derek webb from the CD "the house show"??

I've been asking about it on a few derek webb forums, when a question came up in my mind, which I knew could only be answered by those who know at least a little of my history, which would only be those here on CGR.

here's the crux of the teaching, Being open and honest with people about who you really are, and how sinfull you are.

here's the discussion of it from the Derek webb message board:

What I keep wondering is... how does one go about this, while making sure it does not become too dangerious emotionally speaking.

Derek Webb is the man. I love the House Show! He speaks and plays such truth! It's awesome!

To answer your question, I think the heart of his message is that we try and hide ourselves from others. We try and convince others of a pseudo-righteousnesss that none of us have. His message is that we should stop acting and just be real with one another.

In the particular case you mentioned, I would say that

A) That person would need to let God remove their fear of being revealed.
B) That person should find trusted friends to confess to.
C) That person should then live their lives from that point on, living like a sinner saved by grace, not afraid to seem as though he may not have it all together in some areas of his life.

Did that answer your question, or no? It may not have, but I tried =).

I don't think he means that we are all to go around with big signs saying "I struggle with hating others" or "I regard lust in my heart." I think what he meant is that we are at least to stop acting as though we have it all together and be real. If we have problems, say, with lust, then let us confess that to Him and be open and honest about it, not seeking to cover it up. Because all we do when we cover it up is complicate it, while if we confess it "the light goes on, and it makes it that much harder to go back into hiding."
See what I'm saying?

See what I'm saying?

This isn't Joel's dad just pretending to be Joel is it?

yes, Derek webb IS awesome. maybe we could talk about him next time we see eachother!

as for if you answered my question... a little, but i'm not sure. Would doing the things you mentioned keep the person from going over the edge emotionally speaking? I guess I'm just thinking of myself trying to do this, and how easly I get emotional when people think badly of me. If someone where to shun me because of my being open and honest, I'd have to fight going over the edge again. I want to try to avoid such situations as much as possible, but i'm not sure if they are avoidable in this instance.

Although I am not familiar with Derek Webb and his teachings I do have some experience with sin. If you are comfortable talking to someone else about your specific struggles then do so. But no one needs to know what is between you and God. Certainly make it clear to the unbeliever that Christians are just like them, struggling every day with temptation and sin and we know what it is to hate and lust and all the other things that we sinners do. That the only difference is that we are saved in Christ and no longer have to feel or be guilty before God. I certainly am not proud of my past and rarely even speak of it. My present is also filled with struggles but I simply look to Christ and all is well. If we look at ourselves too much we see a great deal of sin and quickly become full of guilt. Guilt becomes a burden on our back and bends us over to the point we can't look up but only at ourselves which brings more guilt. As Christian, in "Pilgrims Progress", look to the cross and the burden will fall.
