I'm revamping my rig.

I'm trading in my ampeg 810 for a mesa/boogie 410 (older diesel model).

And I just purchased a Mesa/Boogie 400 (non-plus) on ebay.

I'm soooo excited. 300 watts of tube power .

Using a 60W Crate for practice, and a 120 Valvetronix stack for gigs. Will get a Phil Jones Suitcase as soon as my startup has more cash flow.

Here's my new head.

I'm most likely going to return this cab to guitar center because it was used and the speakers are crap. I have another seller with a cab just like this except no porting in the back (I've heard sealed cabs are better for tube heads... no lost air...) so I'm gonna try to get that. Still, this cab is heavy. It's harder to move than my 810 was... I really need some casters.

But this head sounds amazing. Beautiful warm sound. Chords are the warmest things ever. I really haven't gotten to crank it to overdriving yet... that will be fun. But beautiful sound. With it and my stingray, I'm getting a very Justin Chancellor-esque tone (from tool) which I'm not complaining about.

I <3 Mesa.

Yes, it is. I mostly use it for my tele, but it does have enough poop to fill a small auditorium for bass use. The PJB amp would be better suited, but alas, I do not have enough billable hours in yet to afford one.

I played it in a band situation tonight...

I love the sound, but that 410 is too brutal. It is... denser? than my 810 was. It's a lot harder to move than the 810 actually. It weighs a lot more for its size (100+ lbs for a 410 as opposed to 160 for an 810).

I'm taking the cab back tomorrow, and I've found an older mesa 115 (I like their older cabs more than the powerhouse cabs) and now I'm just looking for a 210. Hopefully this will save me from back problems.

But this amp is sooooo loud. Like HOLY CRAP loud. Tube watts really are so much louder. Right now I have 3 different brands of power tubes in there, and they are only 6L6's (150 watts instead of 300). I had the pre-amp gain turned up to 8 (For a slightly overdriven sound) and I had the master on 2. It was overpowering my bandmates 100 watt rivera head, drums, acoustic guitar over PA system... hahaha it's amazing.

So I'm gonna take the little bit of excess money from stuff that I am selling and get it retubed and cleaned up.

I have the carvin (1X15 2X8 with horn) cab in my sig driven by a Ampeg something or rather...I think its 350 watts. It's my first amp/cab setup and it works okay. I think my low B might be a bit too much for it though.

I have used a Fender KXR100 for years now

It's actually a keyboard amp, but I was after an amp that handled the bottom end of a 5 string well - and this came up at the right price and handles it brilliantly (think how low a keyboard range goes)

It is not sophisticated, and there is less control than you'd have on a BXR100, but on the other hand it is far more versatile as it has a treble horn (as well as the 1 x 15" Bass) and 3 inputs, so it can double as a small PA amp, or share with guitars etc.

I'd recommend it.

Dom.
