10 hours???? How many weeks have you been going? Our band camp starts the 8th of August. We only have like 4 days of it though. I think in those 4 days we put in about 55 hours. Ours is pretty simple. The first day is teaching the newbies the basics. Then we start memorizing music, along with learning the show. Is it hot out there? I know that by 11:30 here it is already almost 100. I think you ppl in Kentucky are more into marching band. Out here in Kansas it isn't as big. We would travel all the way back to the eastern parts for marching shows....we took em by storm with our 4A band. The state here has a rule that we can't go to more than 4 competitions. What is your show this year? Ours is a construction theme.(Workin 9 to 5, Chaing Gang, and somethin else) Instead of having regular uniforms, we have costumes that fit our theme. Last year we did pirates of the Carribean, and the year before we got to wear Zoot suits. So we have fun. How big is your band?

I was in guard for three years in jr. high. I miss it a lot, especially performing on the floor for competitions and stuff. I still have my silk and my rifle from way back when.

I was supposed to go to the DCI Midwestern Championships a few days ago in Indy, but something weird happened, and we ended up not going. I went to the Phantom Regiment Drum Major camp this summer, and that was fun. We got to do basics with Regiment, and it was freakin awesome! Especially the 6-to-5's at about 180 bpm all the way down the field. Great stuff! But yeah, I'm a drum major, and I'm in the brass line, so we have a natural rivalry with the guard. Maybe that's because our guard has gone terribly downhill over the years, but it may also be because they're always taking out brass players with their flags. I don't know. Oh well, I'm a band geek for life.

I started band in 4th grade; the elementary school didn't have a marching group, though, so I did that until 5th grade.

I was in marching band in 6th grade; that was the only year that the school that I went to had an actual "marching band"... I think we only did one, maybe 2 parades.

In 7th and part of 8th grade, I was at a different school; in band, but we didn't march. In the 2nd part of 8th grade, the school I went to had no band at all. For freshman year, we had a small band (pathetic, six people, and only half of them played) that only did one concert and we went outside and tried marching, but it was pretty pointless.

My mom used to be a flag-twirler. What's the technical name for that? (We never associated with them; at my school they were just a couple of the cheerleaders who were souped-up... not actual flag-twirlers)

If it was your mom, they had a different name for color guard back then I believe. I can't remember what it is off the top of my head, but nowadays, it's color guard.

Oh, have things changed that much since 1985? I thought the color guard were the folks who carry the state flag and national flag... like I said, I was just ever with the band.
