Plantains and Yucca

Just curious who has ever consumed either of these foods in large quantities.

While in Peru, we ate a LOT of plantains... in the city, they were fried. Fried wasn't so bad at first... after awhile it just got old. They were very greasy. I still think they would have been better with cinnamon and sugar.

In the villages we had platanos boiled... and we thought fried was weird. They were... VERY heavy. Dense, I guess. And chewy.

We also had a a fair amount of Yucca root (while we were in villages). It's almost the texture of a potato, but more stringy... and a different flavor. Very dry.

Accompanied by a ton of rice (well, maybe a half-ton) and some strange animals... the food, well... stuck with you for awhile. :P

When I'm spending time in West Palm Beach, Florida, I tend to eat quite a bit of plantains and yucca (due to the immense hispanic population).
Some of the supermarkets will make fresh meat-filled yucca balls. They're really good. I think they taste just like potatos.

Plantains are cool.

I almost forgot why moderating food was annoying when I did it way back when. After your post I think I remembered. ;-)

Meat-filled yucca balls sound pretty good, actually.

The picture below is of one of the meals I had the ... opportunity to consume while in an Amazon village. The white is rice, the yellow is broccoli, the "meat" is "majas" this giant guinea-pig type of animal... the big yellow thing is a boiled plantian (chewy, hard) and under that is a slice of boiled yucca (quite flavorless, but okay). Just try consuming that meat and platano with that fork...

But hey, it was food...
