I've seen Boyd Tinsley (of Dave Matthews Band) use a wah but I've heard violin distortion...

I just found these youtube videos:

Both of them took skill, but in my opinion the first one was terrible because the distortion made the violin sound nothing like a violin. The second one was fantastic, sounds amazing but it does sound like a violin insted of a more generic metal sound.

There's also a song on Third Day's newest album that has an electric violin solo w/ some mild distortion on it. Sorry I can't remember which song though... It sounds pretty sweet though.

I know this thread is vintage in Internet time frame, but when I saw it it just reminded me of this...

Post violin stores

Once you have an electric violin, electric viola, electric cello or electric upright bass or an acoustic instrument with a pickup, you are only half ready to be heard! The other half of your sound comes from the amplifier. Get a mismatched amp and your great tone suddenly sounds tinny or distorted.
