It makes Jesus sound like just another person, and he's not he's holy.

One regular poster actually has it as their avatar. A picture with Jesus and a stereo(?) and the words 'Jesus is my Homeboy'.
That would be me. Why? Because Jesus IS my Homeboy. I'll elaborate on that statement later.

Quote:
They bug me because they were started to make fun of Christianity and now lots of Christians (Unknowingly?) buy them.
The word "Christian" was originally a derogatory name used against the Church in Antioch, but we all call ourselves Christians.

That's a matter of perception. I see it as meaning that He's my best friend.

Quote:
yeah i think jesus deserves better than "homeboy"
The concept of fellowship (Christianese for friendship) between God and man goes right back to Genesis. Whether you call Him, "Friend" or "Homeboy", in my opinion, is merely a question of vernacular, because the two words are synonymous in their use.

I'm more confused as to why Jesus has a boombox in your avatar, personally.

I want a shirt that has a little Mexican boy on it with text that reads "My name is Jesus, and I AM NOT YOUR HOMEBOY!"

Business at the front, party at the back. I'd grow a mullet, but I'm not allowed. Sergeant-Majors can be really sticky about that kind of thing.

i do agree with the fact that saying something like "Jesus is my Homeboy" seems to bring Jesus lower - closer to our level. Jesus is on our level in that he understands us since he did once become a man. But He is not on our level in that he is God. Saying Jesus is your Homeboy seems somehow disrespectful to him.

i do however, have to agree with Grasshopper. the word "Christian" started out as something that was derogative. it was a mocking word that believers chose to accept as our own.

for those who think jesus would have a problem being referred to as a "homeboy"

http://bloviate.net/read/wwjrd.htm

I didn't write it, but i find it inspirational. It helps remind me to stop being such a high and mighty holier than thou, and try to be a real person, you know, the kind non-christians will talk to.

p.s. If Jesus came down to my place, i'm sure that we could jam out (i bet he would be a great drummer) or maybe discuss life over a nice glass of wine (i mean, who's going to skip a glass of wine when Jesus is coming over? He's supposed to make the best stuff ever. )

Anyway.

Is it inherently wrong to refer to Jesus as your "homeboy?" No, of course not. Is Jesus our "homeboy" in some regard? Yes, I guess you could say that (depending on how you define terms). However, simply because we CAN do something doesn't mean its the best idea.

You have to evaluate these shirts in light of the sub-culture in which they were released. To the best of my knowledge these shirts weren't released by some over-zealous Christian t-shirt manufacturere. They were released by secular companies that stock stories like The Buckle or American Eagle in our shopping malls. They were released with extreme irreverence towards our Lord and Saviour. Instead of the Christian culture expanding into the secular cutlure, you have the secular culture having fun and making profit off of Christian imagery. This is why you have Aschton Kutcher on MTV wearing a "Jesus is My Homeboy" t-shirt. Its just a trend. They chose Jesus because it would be absurdly silly and sell a bundle of t-shirts.

Worse, they didn't stop with "Jesus is My Homeboy" t-shirts. I've seen similiar shirts with Mary on them. And I even saw a shirt with a picture of Jesus with a crown of thrown on that said "THE BOSS" on it. It was literally the most offensive t-shirt I've ever seen....and it was hanging right next to a "Jesus is My Homeboy" shirt. That is the level of reverence towards Christ this sub-culture has. When you support "Jesus is My Homeboy" t-shirts, you're supporting people that have no respect for our Lord and Saviour.

But doesn't domesticating Jesus make him more appealing to people, Sean? I mean, Ashton Kutcher made me feel cool to be a Christian for the first time in my life. If Ashton Kutcher can flippantly display Jesus on a t-shirt, doesn't that mean that the Gospel is finally becoming less offensive? And we hould do everything in our power to make Jesus cooler, right?
