I didn't use it on my boys. I opted for the cheaper and works much better corn starch. Corn starch absorbs the moisture. Baby powder does the same but it has fragance added to it and cornstarch doesn't. I only used it on the boys when they had diaper rash problems and not a preventive measure. I occasionally use cornstarch for myself to absorb moisture when it is really hot in places I get heat rash.
But using either of them on a baby can be harmful if you put an abundance on them. Just like you, if there is too much released in the air you breathe it in. Not good. I would suggest using it very sparingly and just when needed for diaper rash.
I hope that helps. I take it you are babysitting.

We found that our boys get a rash from baby powder - they seem to be very sensitive to any thing with fragrances in them.

If rashes become a problem try cornstarch. It is perfect for that. Both of my boys have had really sensitive skin. Corn starch is 100% natural. I mean it is food. I have found it works better anyway.

Baby powder doesn't do anything that disposable diapers won't. Disposable diapers have so much "powder" packed into them that it's bordering on crazy. If you do the cloth diaper thing, though, baby powder might work well in moderation. There is a dust-inhaling risk, especially with the "genuine talc" variety.
