No, I love my 5-string. The low B is great for anything, nice jazz notes, or heavy metal. It's not wasted space in my opinion. I love my 5-string the best.

I would say just the opposite!
Funk and slap are harder and less useful on a 5, because that low doesnt sound as good and its too wide.
Everything else is good because you have a bigger range.

Not true at all. Five strings are very useful in general rock settings because of the low notes, and I want a six (or maybe a seven, but the odds of me finding one that is decent that I can afford are slim to none) string just so I can do more chordal work. And lets remember that most of the really funky guys like Vic Wooten and Marcus Miller play four strings for the most part.

I'd tune a four string to BEAD anyday if I was playing a song where I had to go lower than a low E rather than use a five string. I rarely use the high g string anyways. It doesn't have any sustain and I usually play a high g (if it fits) on the fifth fret on the D string or tenth fret on the A string.

Somebody a long time ago put a "cave" option as a joke and it has stuck.
It doesn't mean anything.
Use it if none of the options apply, or if you are strange.

Don't mean to get off topic, but the only reason I put cave is because I accidentally put one too many poll options when I was creating the poll and didn't know what to put. a I've seen the cave option on other polls so I just put it on.

After having playerd a 5 string for a few months, I now find it hard to do without the B string. And I still use the G string often enough that I would still prefer a 5 over a BEAD on a 4.

So 5 for me, at least for now.

I'm not normally a bassist but when I play bass at my church(which only happens when our bassist is not there, which is rare) I prefer 4 strings. For the way I play, more than that is completely unnecessary.

Thats exactly how i feel I feel uncomfortable on a four string and ive only had my five for 6 months. well i geuss id play a four string if it was a higher end bass or if the price was aamzing. For now ill stick with a five though. But a few people have talked about the limitations of a five string to some forms of music and i do agree with tem cuz ive found it harder to go from slappin a four string to slappin a five. Probably normal though.

You're right, it is kinda hard to slap a 5 string due to the closeness of the strings to each other. I think the only reason I would go to a 4 stringer ever is for slapping.

Not all five strings have narrow string spacing. Try something besides an Ibanez Soundgear and you'll see what I mean. I used to have an MTD Heir five string that had the same spacing as a Fender Jazz four.

I started out on a 4 string back in the day because I wanted to play like cliff burton. I switched to a 5 after about 5 years. Then I switched to The electric guitar when I was 14. I still have my basses but I mainly play them when the church needs a backup player. And sometimes people ask me for lessons. I have a music man five and a music man 4 and 2 300w Sunn heads with 1 4x10 cab and a 2x15 cab. All in storage because I don't use them. I should sell them. but oh well.
