Oh No! Oh My!

Some of you might remember a year ago an old band I was apart of called poor yorik. That band has long since disbanded and somewhat formed into a much more upbeat and happy band called The Jolly Rogers.

The music is folk pop, a crossbreeding of Animal Collective and early Cat Stevens, and probably some Sufjan Stevens. I've copied links to 3 songs you can download, or you can just visit the website, http://www.thejollyrogers.org/

The Pirate's Anthem
The Party Punch
Oh Be One

Tell me if you Like/Love/Hate it.

I'm shipping this off to CGR Members' Bands. 'Tis the appropriate forum.

Sounds great, stays interesting.
It sounds like you guys are influenced by John Vanderslice, especially in the singing and melody.
I can hear a little Promise Ring in there too.
Good stuff. It sounds well recorded, what studio did you do these at?

Interesting stuff. Still hearing some Radiohead, which is fine (I am not a fan). Definitely a different direction than your last band, and very enjoyable material. I'll keep an ear out for you guys around town.

You do know many bands have taken the name "The Jolly Rogers," however?

Did you ever listen to the Forty Second Scandals? They were a jaw-droppingly amazing band from Austin. You all remind me of them, especially their last disc. Which is a great thing.

I'm hearing some Mountain Goats, too.

I recorded 8 songs including the 3 on linked above myself using an Mbox...and lots of time. It was a fun learning process. No studio, just my bedroom and 2 microphones.

This is the second time someone has compared us to John Vanderslice...and i've never even heard his music. I guess i should probably find out who he is.

I looked up Fory Second Scandals and heard a couple songs and liked them a lot...it didn't seem like they're still playing anymore, though. I'm not familiar with Mountain Goats or Promise Ring.

As far as the name, "the Jolly Rogers" is concerned, i was aware that there's a band in austrialia named the jolly rogers...i think one in arizona...but I didnt find out about the local austin "The Jolly Garagers" until after i had bought a domain name and webspace. So i'm not sure if that's going to cause too much confusion or what...but that's what i have for now until we come up with something better. We're not the best at naming things. Ehh.

Anyways, thanks to all for listening. If anyone is interested in getting a demo from me, just say so!

Those are all really cool songs and they sound great. I never in a million years would have guessed that those were "just my bedroom and 2 microphones" recordings. They sound incredible. For the style you're playing the recordings really can't get much better, though with a studio you could probably record faster.

Everything about those songs sound really solid and professional. I would be really surprised if you didn't find a following.

The Mbox is a computer interface, right? Well, great job man, they sound really clear. What kind of mics were those?

Also, you can hear John Vanderslice at http://barsuk.com
(the label that gave us DCFC)

Okay, I want a demo when you get more. As I said in my CGR blog, I think the Jolly Rogers have the potential to be my favorite new band of 2005.

thanks for listening people...now just go tell all your friends! hehe.

the two microphones that were used to record were a Shure KSM27, and a small diaphragm MXL 603S. Not the greatest microphones...but that's all i had to work with.

Is Jeff the only one that wants a copy of demo? There's 8 or 9 songs we have recorded, and i'm sending a few out for free...so if anyone wants one just PM me with your address and i'll send them as soon as i get the free time to go the post office.

I'm trying to get yours in the mail in a couple days, Jeff, so bear with me.
