| The Neverknown http://www.purevolume.com/theneverknown
Mostly conceptual at this stage, The Neverknown are a punk rock band hailing from British Columbia. Actually, right now it's just me on guitar and vocals recording crummy little demoes because I don't have a band together yet. But it's better than nothing.
I play guitar and sing. Occasionally I pretend to play bass or drums. I record sickly sweet solo music under the name Three-Way Radio, which can also be found on PureVolume. But that music is not at all indicative of my usual style, which ranges from power-pop to hardcore. But with The Neverknown, I just want to play some punk rock.
If you're a musician in the Fraser Valley and are interested in playing intelligent punk and/or rock music, feel free to contact me.
Influences for The Neverknown include Dogwood, Ghoti Hook, Say Anything, St. Joy, Ace Troubleshooter, Watashi Wa, Roper, Calibretto and The Violent Femmes.
I registered the name at PureVolume and I'll start posting demoes of songs on there as soon as I get recording them. I have some preliminary ideas that I'm really excited about : I just need to find some other musicians to play with now...

| You ought to get a drum machine or something. Be like Big Black in the early stages. One man DIY.

I have a cheap-ass keyboard that I got a garage sale that produces servicable drum beats, but for some reason when I record them on my computer, certain essential elements don't come through at all. Such essential elements as the high-hat (open or closed), the crash, and a couple of the toms. If I had a proper drum kit of my own, I'd play drums myself, but I don't so I can't. As it is, I'm looking for a bassist/guitarist and a drummer to rock out with. Quote: |

I've been putting together ideas for The Neverknown, recording bursts of guitar noise mixed with riffs that sound like Black Sabbath being dragged through a kiddie pool of molasses. Plus a few more melodic punk sing-alongs.
The prototype song for The Neverknown is one I wrote a while back called "Dark Sky for a Dark Heart". Other potential songs for The Neverknown:
"Jaded Girl"
"Emo for Tough Guys"
"Marionette"
"Metro"
"A Toast to the Past as it Passes (Here's to You)"
"Norah Jones"
"He Said/She Said"
"Burn My Pain" |

| I've been recording for the past little while, but the computer I record on is nowhere near the computer that connects to the internet. But hopefully I'll have some songs uploaded to http://www.purevolume.com/theneverknown soon. |

| Huzzah! I am in the process of uploading three demoes to the purevolume site. Go. Listen. Enjoy.
And please critique; I don't get much feedback on this stuff because the only people who hear it are friends and family. If something sucks, let me know.
The three songs will be "Dark Sky For a Dark Heart", "Rebellious Punk Song No. 5", and "Norah Jones". |

| They just sound naked - any chance you can add some basic midi drums & bass? I do think once you get a band behind this it'll sound great - good, meaty progressions and very passionate delivery.

But they wouldn't sound good. As for bass, once I'm back at school I'll be borrowing instruments all over the place to flesh the songs out. So, for now, all I've got is nudity. |

| I think once you have the full band you'll sound great. It reminds me of Lifetime in their best era - your lyrics aren't punk rock, your music isn't emo. Rather, it's meaty punk rock with more sardonic, personal lyrics. It doesn't sound bandwagon that way, and I would be very pleased if you could get a capable rhythm section behind you - you already have a good voice with a good range and so the rest will hopefully fall into place.

I'm hoping that once I'm back at school I'll be able to track down a good drummer. I'll be busy with summer camp until then. I know a few good bassists, so that shouldn't be a problem. |

| I agree with Jeffrey's analysis: great beginning, but it would greatly improve with drums and bass. It really sounds very promising, though. I'll definitely keep an eye on this project.
I have a cheapo Casio myself, so I understand your struggles to get decent drum sound out of a keyboard. Maybe you could DL some drum beats and try to work with those? And there's a way to get your guitar to sound like a bass... at least, I've done it with the program I use, Audacity. You record the track and lower the sound an octave. Just some ideas for making your tracks more listener-friendly over the summer.

| Thanks Rachel! I appreciate the compliments. I'm using Cool Edit Pro, and I'm not sure if there's an effect that would lower my guitar an octave. |

| ITEM OF INTEREST!
I now have a drummer. My wonderful girlfriend, Rachael, happened to meet a guy named Tyler at Tomfest a couple years ago and he now attends TWU as his dad teaches here. We've jammed together a couple times now and it looks like we're actually going to be a band. I've talked to a friend of mine who plays bass and Tyler's talking to a guitarist friend of his. So far "Dark Sky for a Dark Heart" and "Rebellious Punk Song No. 5" are the two songs that work the best, though "Emo for Tough Guys" and "Jaded Girl" are working pretty well too.
Other songs we're working on:
"A Jaded Worshipper, Me"
"Christian Pop Sub-Culture"
"Conversational Alibis"
"Cure for the Common Breakup"
"Every Other Emo Kid"
"Everyone Else is Asleep"
"Marionette"
"Metro"
"My God, My God"
"Ninety-Nine Stayed Home"
"Sophia"
"Your Lips On Mine"
So...that's a lot of songs. Sorry, no new recordings as of yet, but hopefully that will change as well since I am currently enrolled in Digital Recording and I'm hoping to get into the studio one evening with Tyler and trying to record "Rebellious Punk Song No. 5" with him. But I've never recorded drums before and I have limited experience recordings guitars and vocals. Still, it would be fun to try.
So, that's what is currently going on with The Neverknown, though I'm not sure if that name is at all permanent or not. |
