Point me in the right direction
I'm new here so forgive me if there are already resources here I haven't been able to find.

I did run a search on slide guitar - read a lot of it but didn't really find what I was looking for:sadyep:

Can anyone point me toward any resources (Give advice, suggest source on this site......) for playing a specific style of slide - I describe it as Mississippi alligator music? I've got it in my head that I can apply the style to some of the old hymns and use it on my worship team

Stephen Curtis Chapman comes close with Lord of the Dance (Already downloaded the Tab) but learning a tab doesn't mean I know what I'm doing:nope:

This guy is not Christian but again comes close in this video
Again - Not really sure what he's doing:-/

Been playing with my slide but really getting no-where

Thanks in advance

This guy teaches some basic riffs:

YouTube - Slide guitar Lesson: Open E slide licks

Look through some of his videos and see if they can get you started.

Here are some good resources

Truefire's David Hamburger's Slide Shop, 10 "vamps/songs" with rhythm and lead riffs tab'd out as well as David's great teaching style on video
Geoff Hartwell has a course via Truefire

Older HotLicks videos with Warren Haynes or LeeRoy Parnel are good

Roy Rodgers is on Homespun or HotLicks

Finally, one of the modern masters, Sonny Landreth has been featured in variuos guitar magazines with instructional columns on both fundamentals as well as his unique behind the slide technique.

Ooh I love blues, for my slide I use a socket wrench thing.

Would it be rude of me to post a bunch of random slide blues vids?

Dailymotion - John Hammond -Can't Be Satisfied - a Music video
YouTube - Son House - Death Letter (live)
YouTube - Mississippi Fred McDowell - Goin Down to the River
YouTube - Booker White - Poor Boy Long Way from Home
YouTube - Broke Down Engine - Dom Flemons

All donations cheerfully accepted! WHen you don't know what your looking for everything is good.

Mychainsaregone must have seen Booker White!

Everything has been great so far . Around here it is a style of music that shows up on sound track of movies and such - I love this stuff

MtlMom 08-02-2009 07:14 PM

I have never heard a reference to Bukka White on this site. This is a good day!

Sean.thomson 08-02-2009 07:15 PM

Yeah, Booker White can get pretty crazy sometimes (here's another vid of him doing the "Spanking the baby" technique).

The blues is a way of life for some people, especially some of us in the southern USA.

Years ago I saw the movie Skeleton Key - Kate Winslot ( Forgive me Kate if your name is spelled wrong). The thing I remember most about the movie was the intro music. It probably isn't a movie I'd necessarily pick up today but I did love that instrumental track - anybody remember it and know of tabs along that line *Note: - Haven't had time to research ALL that has be given me yet - maybe there is some in there already

Sean.thomson 08-02-2009 09:15 PM The Skeleton Key: Edward Shearmur: Music

A lot of good tracks on there. I've heard of Edward Shearmur's stuff but never really checked him out.

Thanks for that last Idea. Actually I'm a little embarrassed I wasn't thinking of some of these ideas myself but everyone's help is definitely streamlining the process. On Amazon under the Skeleton Key sample sound portion were some suggestions - Scott Bomar is an Artist I'm going to follow up on as well.

Her last name's spelled H.U.D.S.O.N.! ;)

Great movie! It's in my collection!

Ummmmmmmmm......... guess I was more insulting than a miss-spelled name. I'm pretty good at asking forgiveness though. Had tons of practice.

Love the sunburst electric in your collection!

I've benefited greatly from lessons from Homespun Tapes, and I would vouch for the high quality of the instruction. For slide guitar, they offer an excellent series by Bob Brozman. I'd also look into the series with Rory Block teaching Robert Johnson -- I don't know if she covers his slide work, but you should learn Robert Johnson songs anyway.

Country slide players to listen to:

Robert Johnson
Blind Willie McTell
Blind Willie Johnson
Muddy Waters (his recordings in the 1950s)
