Hello all

I am currently going to a baptist based college and the subject of gifts, (as in miracles, tongues, interpretation of tongues, ect.) has come up quite a bit. The school's opinion on the matter is that they are not for today, but were for the early church, to establish it? The only verse that I have heard them use to back this up is II Cor. 12:12.
I am not baptist, and do not believe this, but I was wondering, since you all here are baptists, if there are any other scriptures to back this view up. It seems to me that if it is true, it would be mentioned more than once in the Bible, eh? I'm not here to debate....just honestly wondering where else this is covered in the Bible.

To everyone else: As mod, I'll let everyone know that this is an allowed thread so long as it does not turn into a debate, which is always a possibilty with this subject. Since the author of the thread obviously is more curious and a knowledge-seeker than anything else, I'll let the thread stay open, but delete any posts that try to turn it into a debate, unless overruled by a higher-up.

Not to sound paranoid, but I'd rather not say what college I go to. And, you're right, I'm just seekin' some knowledge here, no debates intended. I would just like to see the verses. Please everyone, do post away!!!

Frankly, though I'm cessationist in practice (thanks largely to the work of John MacArthur and Hank Hannagraff), I haven't seen a good argument for cessationism from the Baptists.

At LC, the subject hasn't come up since my 100 level New Testament class; speaking in tongues (glossolalia--speaking an unknokwn language) was generally regarded as outside influence from pagan cults creeping into the church at Corinth; speaking in tongues at Pentecost (xenoglossy--speaking a known language) was regarded as a miracle.

Hmmm very interesting.
The only Bible class I've taken so far is a simple hermeneutics class, so I'm not sure how deeply clung to this belief is.
And about xenoglossy, why is this miracle not ok now? Or is it, and I'm just misinformed? No one's really talking about it, like you said at your school, Vershal, so I'm having a little bit of a rough time understanding it.

Xenoglossy would be ok now-- I just haven't heard of a case of say and english speaker suddenly speaking french or spanish--- I would love to have this gift. The main reason we don't see it is their is very little need for it - we have the gospel and either preachers or intrpreters available in almost every language. On the day of pentecost their were at best a few thousand believers that mostly spoke greek or aramaic and the need for xenoglossy was greater.

I feel that my original question hasn't really been answered.(you know, the first post) What is it exactly about Gifts do Baptists not believe? I've heard a lot of general statements from people, like "They don't believe the gifts are for today", well, what does that really mean???

Baptists basically believe that with the closing of the Canon, the gifts of tongues and prophecy have ceased, The other gifts, love joy peace, faithfulness, selfcontrol, servantness, pastor teacher, hospitality etc-- these are all still active--- the gifts of tongues and prophecy ceased being necessary when God's word the Canon os scripture was established and is all that we need now to reveal the truths of God.

I don't know if I agree with it, but thank you for telling me.
Is there any Scriptual proof of this, or is this just a natural conclusion the founding peoples came up with?
