| Presbyterian Terms Page These terms are more or less true for all denominations, but they're specific to the PCA, which is what I am most familiar with. Book of Church Order (BCO) - The third part of the Constitution of any Presbyterian denomination--includes instructions for various services and how administrative tasks in the denomination are to be carried out. Called just "The Book of Order" in some denominations. Considered answerable to the Scriptures and to the WCF. Deacon/Diaconate - Ordained laymen who are charged with the care of the physical aspects of the church, including the property and the church's finances. Denomination - A group of churches and presbyteries with their own General Assembly and Book of Church Order. There are multiple Presbyterian denominations, including: Christian Reformed Church (CRC), Cumberland Presbyterian Church (CPC), Evangelical Presbyterian Church (EPC), Orthodox Presbyterian Church (OPC), Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), Presbyterian Church in the United States of America (PC(USA)), and the Reformed Presbyterian Church in North America (RPCNA). General Assembly - The highest ecclesiastical court, which meets annually (second week of June for the PCA), composed of all teaching elders and a set number of ruling elders from every particular church. Deals with matters such as splitting or joining presbyteries, amending the Book of Church Order, etc. Mission Church - A recently-planted church that is still financially dependent on a particular church and lacks a Session. The pastor of a mission church is considered to be the associate pastor of the parent church and on the parent church's session. Particular Church - A financially independent church with a church Session. Presbytery - The ecclesiastical court repsonsible for ordaining and transferring teaching elders, installing and dissolving churches, and other similar business. Has jurisdiction over geographic regions and is considered the point of membership for teaching elders instead of the particular church. Ruling Elder - Ordained laymen who are charged with spiritually shepherding the congregation. Session - The teaching and ruling elders of any particular church. A church's Session does not include teaching elders assigned to ministries other than a church but that attend that church (RUF campus ministers are the most common example of this). The Session is the ecclesiastical court of the particular church and rules on memberships, church discipline, etc. Teaching Elder - An elder ordained for a pastoral position, who receives a salary Westminster Confession of Faith (WCF) - The second part of the Constituion of all Presbyterian denominations except the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Contains our understanding of the teachings of the Holy Scriptures, but is considered answerable to the Scriptures.
