All these announcements are here because we feel them to be useful to our visitors. We have a miniature dictionary (a "terms page"), some useful online links, a letter to our newcomers, and more being added as needed.

All newcomers are asked to read the Letter to Newcomers and the rules before posting here. The rest is simply resource material to be of aid to those who need it.

I reccomend every person on this site skim through the contents of this page every month or so, and also refer to it as needed when in discussion.

Dear Theology,

I have been noticing lately that there have been many new people coming to this forum, and I praise God for that.
I am writing to YOU specifically if you are new to this forum.

This forum is intended for intellectual, academic examination of scriptural content, interpretation, and authority. The members who participate here are learned, assertive, and passionate. We represent a spectrum of doctrines, backgrounds, and faiths (or lack of faith). We all search for TRUTH.

In this forum, theology is treated primarily as a matter for the mind, though not without the acknowledgement that it is also a matter of heart. The faith many of us hold as personal and intimate is laid open here to scrutiny and investigation. Such an exercise in philosophical generation therefore requires a conscious shift from the emotional perspective to the critical perspective.

Consider Paul’s instruction: “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness… Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead…they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.” (2 Timothy 3:16, 4:2-3)

We will not scratch itching ears here. The theology forum requires thick skin for constructive participation. You will find very little sugar coating. The most seemingly benign comments are fair game for relentless criticism. We have been accused of being hateful, judgmental, spiteful, cold, heretical, hypocritical and even unChrist-like. The accusations usually stem from a misunderstanding of purpose: we are not here to cheerlead, we are here to examine.

With this said, “Let [our] conversations be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that [we] may know how to answer everyone” (Colossians 4:6) We pray to be always full of grace in our words, and hope for success even half of the time.

In closing, a summary for the chronically ADD: Don’t get offended, we are striving for Truth. Ideas can be attacked in good conscience, people can’t. We don’t coddle, we don’t pat each other on the back, we discuss. We get over it or we get out of here, for our own good.
