I just downloaded both the mp3 and the music video of DC Talks "My Friend (So Long)". My friend and me listened to it a few time and we just can't figure out who/what they are talking about! If anyone knows, please tell me. Oh, BTW, if you haven't seen the video for it, you should it is funny.

I've heard that the song is about the "fourth member" of the band who is rumored to exist. I think the general message is about friends who used to be close to God and later backslid and left their old friends and how their old friends still care about them...that's what I got out of it, anyways. I like the music video too!
Yeah, here's what I heard...

"My Friend, So Long" is kind of a tounge in cheeck song about a fictional fourth member of dc Talk. I guess the story is that he leaves the group to persue a mainstream carear and basically sells out his faith and his friends.

I do not know what you are talking about! The song (which I must say is awesome) is about anyone who is basically a hipicrit and finds that it is easier not to be a Christian. :D
That's another interesting way to look at it. It makes complete sense, but them adding that, "You used to sing that Jesus is the Way," and the excerpt of Jesus Freak add a little to it.

Its not just a rumer. On the Supernatural experience vidio they talk about how its if there was a fourth member and he went mainstream and And he's gone astray and they're just sayin so long. I dont' know if you got that or not. Also in the song While there are these "na na na na" thingys, Toby is saying, "While this is someting fo a fantasy the moral of this story is to stick with your friends. if you listen clsoe enough you can here it.

Also,
At their first concert in Dallas after the release of Supernatural, they said that it's about nobody in particular, just a fictional 4th guy.

I know I'm a bit late but wanted to say that when I was hosting a Christian radio show here in Australia I interviewed Toby just after they filmed the video for My Friend. This is what he said....
T: Really, the way we came up with the song is that we set out to write about a fictional fourth member, a phantom dc Talk member. A guy who takes off, leaves us behind becomes a huge success and we're sitting here dealing with it. He used to say something; he used to be more spiritually based; now he's not. And it does mention that, it doesn't have everything to do with that. It's us dealing with the feelings of that we're proud of him but we're mad at him, we're jealous of him but we call him our buddy. We love him but we 'hate' him. It's kind of us dealing with our own feelings of this guy so here we are this baby band trying to make it. It started off as a joke, kicking around, if one of the three took off. And then we decided to take the approach of a fictional fourth member. Some people say that it's someone talking to us and if you think of it from that perspective it's pretty cool too. You know people coming up to us saying that.
P: Well that's good, I'm glad you're not having a go at any old Christian artists who crossed-over.
T: We wouldn't want to sing about that, in other words if someone's chooses to go one way or another, the last thing we want to do is be judgemental. We have enough struggles ourselves we don't want to be looking at other people and judging.
so there you go, straight from the horses mouth. Can I call Toby a horse?

Wow really- i had always thought it was about this guy who helped them to produce the previous album and then whn interviewed about completely ripped dctalk to shreds saying they were a babyband and all that and who he used to be full on on fire and now hes joined the secular music - i dunno trhats just whwhat i heard.
Actually that would make sense. See that's why true musicians are called artists, cuz what they make is art that can be interpreted different ways.

That's gotta be one of the most misrepresented songs in the history of the world....also happens to be one of my favorites. I always thought it was fictional...maybe that just goes to show you that I'm a weird artist like the rest of 'em. (<:
