Allrightee... here's the deal: I want to get a new multi effects system... I want one that has a MIDI out (so I can do notation on my computer), that sounds sweet in studio AND stage... and for crying out loud (*eye roll*) a few distortions that sound nice and warm, tight, and crisp, and doesn't sound like you kicked your foot through your amp and was playing with a broken speaker (I currently own a Zoom 505) (*blech*)... I don't have a whole lot to spend right now (around $200-$250)... but I would be willing to wait and save up if my dream gear is more (grin*)

Well, thanks for the advice everyone!

To do notation on your computer, you will need a guitar synth, or some other type of pitch-to-MIDI converter. The MIDI information sent by effects units is mostly control messages.

I would have to tell you that the Zoom GFX-8 sounds like the pedal for you! I have one and they are built like a tank, sound great, have Midi in and out, and are $239 at Mars!

I seriously doubt either the ME-30 or the GFX-8 have true "MIDI capabilities." Like Lee said, most of the MIDI stuff sent out of multi-effects processors is control messages. In other words, you CAN'T notate music from it.

If you really want to notate music with your guitar.... you're gonna have to do what Lee said. Get a guitar synth pickup or a pitch-to-midi converter.

Dano is cool but not the best! I just recommend them to folks starting out on the FX journey, that's all! And a couple of their pedals are good enough for me to recommend to other players. Hey dude! Dano's good

I have a Boss ME-30. Truly no real midi, Aux in in the closest thing even has to midi.

Great guitar effects on it.

I actually agree with you dude! I wouldn't recommend all of them.... but I'm using a Fish'n'Chips EQ on my keyboard and lovin' it. :D

Allrightee I have been keeping up with all of your posts... I have a question now... what do you all recommend, specifically, for notation... I know you said either a synth or a MIDI controler- or whatever... but do you all recommend anything specific?
Let me know guys... thanks!

The most common and probably most respected synth pickup is the Roland GK-2A. I think it runs about $300. Then, you'll have to get either a Roland guitar synth with MIDI or a GK-to-MIDI box... I think Roland just released one.

Now, if you don't care about doing notation DIRECTLY from your guitar, you could just buy something like Cakewalk and input the notes with the mouse. It's not like this whole GK thing is necessary simply to make notation. It's only necessary if you want to use your guitar to make notation.

Hope it helps......

For the money and the capabilities, if I didn't already have a POD, I'd pick up a DigiTech RP200. Quality of effects are not bad at all, and DigiTech has become a well respected outfit and gives a nice little box for $150.

Another notation software I'd recommend is PowerTab. It's freeware and will notate tab & standard and print out quality sheet music. I'm using that more than I do Cakewalk anymore.

I agree w/uga, I bought the rp200 and am very happy with it. It has a lot of effects and can be modified easily. The main problem is with trying to switch between effects that are too far away from each other, because it is a linear setup. So what I did is move the effects around to make groups of effects that have interesting contrasting sound combinations that work together, so they are either one or two steps up and down from each other. I never thought I would run out of space with 40 user presets, but I can see how you might need more if you are trying to make groups of sounds. It was only $165 at the local music store. I think it was a good deal.

I have a Korg Pandora PX4 effects processor. Its not a pedal, but you can get any effect, up to seven at once, and it has drumbeats and playback, along with amp/cab modeling. only about 200$, but the con is that you can't use it as a pedal. It operated by buttons and knobs, not footswitches.

i hear good things about the Digitech GNX4. it's $600. it also has a USB port which is a very good idea, and it has it's own software for being edited with a computer. if i change my mind on what i want for effects, i might just buy one. or i might get the Vox Tonelab SE

I think it's safe to say that this thread should've stayed in its grave 2 years buried. The guy hasn't even been on the boards since he posted this. Please let it die.
