hey, i got a DJembe that I played at my church for a little bit until I got my set up there, and I noticed there were only about 2 distinct sounds I could get out of it(i hadnt taken lessons or anything, i wonder if there are Djembe lesson*ponders*) they were hitting the middle with a balled fist and the rim with your fingers, you could get nice sounding stuff if you playing fast, but it was tough to make nice rythyms with that kinda limited options

technically there are three sounds you can get with classical Djembe training. the Goon (bass) Goro ( a meaty slap with the meat part of your palm just before your fingers start) and Pata (a sharp ringing slap using your fingers starting from the first knuckle) they use these names so that you can sing the rhythms you are learning, to aid in playing. you can also use your fingertips like you drum them on a table, muting with your palms. I can get sort of a flam sound by flicking my wrists so that my thumb hits slightly after the rest of my hand.
you can play with your thumbs for an interesting open sound, but it's suggested that when you make the bass sound you you an open palm, slightly cupped. I've heard some djembe players say that when you play the bass sound you should think of pulling the sound out of the drum when you strike. whatever works with tone. I've tried some weird stuff before, like hitting with the heel of your palm and then fingertips. be creative, and you'll find all sorts of sounds you can get out of your djembe.

first of all I want to say I am a bass player and I also play drums and bongos/congas and guitar.....
I think you posted this because you wanted honest opinions so here goes (no offense)
I have lsitened to the 3 clips and here is my take (IMHO):
doumbek: boring, (yes only 10 sec, but you know) but solid rythym
doumbek2: ok, but sometimes the bass hits have too much fingertip in them to a fault, and near the end the rythym is lost, and the roll goes on a little TOO long.
bongo: too many rolls throughout, and the rythym is so unstable is starts anyoing my ears around 20 sec. in . (being a bass player) , and the beat is totally lost near the end.
No offense, but I can't say I'm that impressed by the clips..... you have a good taste for dynamics in the clips, but the problem is that drums, like bass is by and large not a dynamic instrument. It is static. Your job in a band is TO KEEP TIME If the drummer and bass player/ percussionist don't have solid time the whole band will be thrown off..... If you keep a rock hard beat however boring it will be musically better, and then you can add other stuff.....
Keep at it man,
Charlie
