Well.... let's list some!! ;) Only one per post.... ok?
We can play more than six notes at once.

What about 7 string guitars?
Synth tracking is a lot better.
There is no chance that keyboard it better!!!!!! By the way just to let you know guitar is the most popular instrument in the world or at least the us.

Pianos(and synth) provide tone consistancy, and exact distortion when its required(meaning, notes are always correct unless you distort in through a synth, and even then its exact).

Go to this site... ARGH
I have lost the location; found it through google once, but anyway:
I swear to God that I saw this; a site that polled music teachers and what they did. BY FAR they believed that piano should be a first instrument and that it was more usful than a guitar.
Can you lead song service with a guitar as well as you could a keyboard?

Can you lead song service with a guitar as well as you could a keyboard? Are you talking about something like a Worship service? If so, most definitely, I do it all the time.
I guess I better stick up for my instrument here...
1. Guitar's have different (and in my opinion, better :D) sounds than keyboards...and don't tell me that a keyboard can duplicate a guitar's sound, cuz I've never seen one that could do it very well.
2. Guitar's are more portable-you can take them lots of places you can't take keyboards (easily, at least).
Pianos require less care in regards to tuning.
3. Yeah, but guitar's are a lot easier to tune.
Do you have 7 fingers to play all at once with?
4. 7 Fingers aren't needed-we can play open strings or barre chords
5. Guitarists have more fun :p :D
Whoops, I guess that's more than one per post...oh well, sorry :D

Pianos will not make your fingers bleed and cut them open. It will also strenthen both hands a lot.

Keyboards will strengthen your arms and back if you have to lug around a 50+ lb. keyboard to practice and gigs. :D Ahh... the joys of being a keyboard player.

Keyboards have MORE sounds than guitars. Just try finding a guitar that can sound like a Rhodes, a Wurly, a piano, a whole string section, and a boys choir..... I don't think you will. ;)
Not to mention all the kicking synth stuff found on today's keyboards... I just can't get enough of the pulsating pad sounds. :D

Actually, you can fit any steel string guitar with a synth pickup that can control any synth with a midi connection. Tracking slows down a little bit when playing faster, but they're getting better all the time.

well, regarding keyboards and synthesizers(sp?) and i guess even electric guitars, no matter how much the technology progresses, electric instruments will always lack the touch that you get from traditional instruments, like guitars, pianos, saxes and other string and wind instruments.... i like electronic intruments and all, but nothing can replace the sound of an instrument that has a traditional sound......... well thats just my loosely organized, repetitive opinion.

True, true.
About sitting VS standing with a keyboard:
Why stand if you don't have to? I think its easier to play sitting than it is to stand. And if I ever play professionaly, there is nothing that could make me stand if I didn't have to or want to. It's not that I'm lazy, I just like sitting better.

Strange....I actually prefer standing. (at least for keyboard parts, when I play the piano.. I sit.... obviously)
I tried bringing my keyboard throne to band practice a few times... but I never really got into it. There's just something about standing up as you play..... I can't explain it. :D

My guitar can get any sound a keyboard can. I have a roland GK2A synth pickup. I run it to a midi controler that runs to my rack system that includes 3 roland synths, and my computer (yes i carry a computer to gigs) plus my mesa boogie amps means i can get any sound a keyboard can get from strings, sax, synth, piano, sitar, choir voices, flute, mandolin, obo, french horn, acoustic guitar, twelve sting acoustic, and my basic tube amp sounds from the mesa boogies. I can get anything you name it. oh and by the way. keyboards cant bend notes or make dive bombs, and once i tune my guitar it stays tuned (called a double locking trem system.) guitar leads a worship service just as good as a piano/keyboardist. I lead youth worship with my giutars. Arppegios are easy on guitar if you know what your doing. listen to eddie van halen on eruption. He goes through thos arrpegios like greased lightning. Ive gotten my two cents worth in and im spent.

Ok... y'all will have to forgive me here. I completely forgot about the Roland pickup and other such stuff. I should've said "Guitars can't PLAY like a Wurly, Rhodes, etc, etc".... there's just something missing playing a Rhodes sound with a guitar. :D
keyboards cant bend notes or make dive bombs
Of course they can!! It's called a pitch bend wheel! ;)
guitarguy
12-26-2001, 11:56 PM
i said dive bomb not whimpy flutter. i know that you have a pitch wheel. that doesnt do a dive bomb it lowers pitch like one key. dive bomb is a lot more than that. more like 4 or 5

A lot of keyboards have ribbon controllers that can do that.

Most good keyboards allow you to change the bend range of the pitch bend wheel. You can usually make it up to obscene things like two octaves. :) Not to mention the keyboards with ribbon controllers, like Basszilla pointed out. (Kurzweil even makes an external ribbon controller so ANY keyboard can have that ability)

why guitar is better then keyboard:
1. cuz i said so
2. you can so much more with a guitar for so much cheaper
3. um.....name one cool key board player........yeah, that's what i thought.......

Guitars don't really do that much.Especially when you get callouses on your fingers.

I actually have to agree with you here. :D..... Keyboard is EXPENSIVE. The cheapest GOOD keyboard (meaning one I'd consider performing with) is about $1000.
3. um.....name one cool keyboard player........yeah, that's what i thought.......
You've GOT to be kidding!!! What about Josh Moore of Caedmon's Call???? (He lead the production of their most recent album... and he's only 18) What about Scotty Wilbanks?? (The guy who plays on most of Third Day's albums.... you can't tell me you don't like Thief!) What about Michael W. Smith?? Look, just cool it man. I'm not up on newer stuff, but you can't just go around and trash everyone who plays a particular instrument: and it's not like your saying "name one great basson player", this is the keyboard we're talking about. Lot's of people play it: when you want to compose, or explore theroy and techniqe, you learn keyboard. When you want to program a track, you use a keyboard. When you go to a music studio, they will sooner teach piano than guitar, and as my music teacher says(who also has guitar teachers and other instrumentalists there), its a bigger investment to learn piano. So watch what your're trashin.

Pianos are better, faster, harder, stronger.(forgive me DaftPunk)
They are better because you can play faster on them, they are harder to screw up on when you are playing basics, and you can't destroy a piano as easily a guitar.

hah, if you really want to, we could stage a fight with your $1000+ piano and me with my $200+ WE'll see who's instrument lasts longer
What are all these keyboard haters doing in this forum? Sheesh. I'm on the drum team, I think. Drummers have the most fun. I like to have 12 toms, and 12 kicks, and tune them chromatically so my drums solos are specific to the key of the song. I also have them rigged so I can change the tuning with my nose to do bends.
OK. Nevermind. That stopped being true by the end of the first line.

Dude, you have got to be kidding me. Do you mean to say that there is an argument going about whether the keyboard is better than the guitar??? There is no comparison. I've tried trumpet, bass guitar, piano, drums, violin, and I have come back to the best.... the guitar. There is no instrument more versatile and portable and entertaining than the guitar
What do people lead worship with? The guitar. What can you do that makes you automatically cooler than everybody else? play the guitar. who gets all the chicks? guitar players. what instrument can you carry around anywhere and set it up and play it in a couple minutes? the guitar.
I have to admit some girls fall for keyboard players. These are the girls to stay away from my friend. you want a girl who knows what's best. a band always starts out with a guitar player. And the cameras are always focused on the guitar players in concerts. and the guitar is always turned up the loudest.
probably the most famous keyboard player is Elton John. And he's gay. Do you want that kind of a reputation pinned on you? no my friend, elton john is very horribly gay

So maybe I'm joking around a little bit, but this is a good vacation from all the serious debates in this web site.
JSmith you should change your strings more often. they can get very corroded and be really bad sounding. and when you do change them, get elixer mediums from musiciansfriend.com. pound for pound they are the best guitar strings ever made. and you get a good deal at that site!

Wrong. Guitar might be easier to learn at first, but if you want to be great, it's at least as hard as playing piano.
If you think I'm wrong, try learning a John Petrucci or Robert Fripp solo some time, I think you'll change your tune pretty quickly.
JungleJonDOC
12-27-2001, 10:33 PM
I'd agree, playing the guitar is easier to learn at first, but it can be just as hard to play as the keyboard. GzusPhreek2k, I don't think you have mastered both instruments in order to make a reasonable statement like that, anyways
GzusPhreek2k, are you saying that santana isn't talented? dave matthews? tim reynolds? tons of awesome guitar players that I don't have time to mention? I think that statement is bias and unreasonable
If guitar was easier to play, why is that so bad? would that make it a worse instrument? I think you would be able to amplify talent if that were the case, but I don't think it is

i played piano for 5 years, and can play just about any song on piano. Guitars have about the same complexity as a piano. To become a master guitarist you need to know music theory, learn the chords, learn the different chord voicings (about 6 to 7 variations on a G chord for example), practice every day. so its not that people arent talented enought to play the keys but maybe that its the MOST BORING INSTRUMENT KNOWN TO MANKIND. sorry i got carried away. and yes, guitar players are the cooler ones. i lead worship services every sunday, wednesday, thursday, and friday with guitar, we used to have a keyboardist but i taught him how to play the guitar and he was hooked. and did you ever think that some keyboard players arent talented enough to play a guitar?
Strider
12-28-2001, 01:17 AM
Personally, I am fascinated by musical instruments in general. I would like to have the time to learn several instruments. I am fascinated watching bands perform and play instruments, everything from guitar to keyboard to drums, even that wierd instrument you have to sit down to play? Kinda looks like a guitar - oh whats it called? Anyway, thats my two cents.

No... that would be the triangle or the tuba. :)
Lets not go there o.k.! Leave us tuba players out of this! There is nothing simple or boring about the tuba! The tuba is simply the greatest instrument known to man!
Sorry to get so upset, you just touched a nerve there! :)
Why pianos/keyboards are better than guitars-
A piano will keep you warm longer.
A piano will do more damage when it hits the ground.
You can ride a piano.
Many people think that playing a high tech keyboard means you are a genius.
Some keyboards allow for backup control of the space shuttle.
Would Lurch be as cool if he played the guitar?
Why guitars are better than keyboards/pianos-
This is harder than I thought!
Chuck Berry/Marty McFly.
You can rig a guitar to shoot rockets.
Gibsons with crazy paint jobs look better than crazy painted Stienways.
Would Hendrix been cool if he played the piano with his teeth?
Why piano/keyboard/guitar is better than bass-
No one says "hey boy, you know that sure is a big gee-tar."
No one says "hey, isn't your guitar missing some strings?"
No one says "That was nice, but I couldn't hear you."
We should all quit now and pick up the bagpipes!

If I may add one more rotten apple to the argument barrel...
Keyboards can solo easier(I mean through a whole song, not a quick solo).
And what's all this talk about the piano/keyboard being "boring"?!?!
Anyway, it seems to add up to a matter of personal prefrance... played out in the keyboardist's turf.

Depends on the song.

It seems that most of you do not know anything about either instrument...I learned guitar, and I am not talking about sissy chord stuff, I mean I learned how to really play it. I eventually taught myself how to play keyboard and granted even though I am not good, I thouroughly enjoy playing it. The only reason some say guitar is cooler is because most of the music today is played with guitar...it only has to do with style. Within a worship team a keyboardist's place has changed drastically within the last decade...just as you can say the keyboard is not essential likewise the guitar is not essential. Each has its role in music. Personally, I prefer leading with a guitar but right behind the lead instrument and drums and bass the next instrument in line is the keyboard, that's right... in front of the electic guitar.
These instruments can not be compared in which is better because each has pros and cons and I believe they equally balance...
I predict in ten years this topic will change to "which is better? oboe/flute"
We should all realize our purpose in our band or worship team whether we play keyboard or guitar because equally we share the same role and have the equal responsibility to lead others into worship.
God Bless

Unregistered,
I hear you dude. This thread was started mainly as a joke. I just thought we could have some fun messing with our guitar buddies. I totally agree with you that each instrument has it's own specific role.
That's why I said earlier that both are essential for a well-rounded band. :D

I complety agree with both of you. But seeing as you both agree if I just agreed with one of you I'd be agreeing with both of you...Right. Enough of that. I'll shut up now.
Wow. That was profound. I had to just stop everything and think about it for awhile. WHOA!! :D

Sorry you had to stop and think. I get this way when I need sleep.

I have to admit some girls fall for keyboard players. These are the girls to stay away from my friend. you want a girl who knows what's best. a band always starts out with a guitar player. And the cameras are always focused on the guitar players in concerts. and the guitar is always turned up the loudest.
LOL!!!! That's hilarious!

Sorry, Jb182... but your post had no edifying content in it whatsoever. I don't mind if someone says "gay" or "suck" once or twice... but to keep on saying it just to be stupid merits complete deletion of your post. The only reason I left this part of it was to let other people know that I am serious about inappropriate behaviour in this forum.

Ok... I've got a few things to point out.
1) This is the first thread in the keyboard/piano forum to go over 100 posts!! WOOHOO!!! :D
2) This is the first thread I've ever had to do any "real" moderating in. I'm gonna ask y'all once more to stop bringing up the whole gay thing. (this is NOT for anybody in particular... 'cause we all helped to egg it on a little)
Another friendly notice from your resident keyboard/piano mod. :D

hey how bout this for kicks-
those of you that like the keyboard better than guitar- sweet, that is so cool.
those of you that like guitar better than keyboard- dude that is so cool.
it's all about the tastes, like chocolate vs. vanilla, alot of people think their both good, but then there's people like me that if there's a choice, it's definitely chocolate.
although the guitar is more portable, it's all good whatever you prefer. And whoever says that guitar gets the chicks, dude i need to talk to you cause it's not happened for me yet.
