Who is it (in your humble opinion)?

Adam

Tool, of course.:)

CynicalRepose

No, it's radiohead, silly

Adam
12-21-2001, 05:45 PM
Well, hey, I like Radiohead too, but Tool is just more artisitic. And their music is more complex.

nestamanchris

Uhh, not too many choices, my man. I would vote DMB, but oh well.

Erika
12-21-2001, 06:08 PM
None of the aforementioned
Out of courtesy to Travis I will say Tool
BUT

The truth is
that

TIM FINN
is the man!
And Split Enz is the most artistic band in the whole world
but that is my humble NZ opinion...

What do you mean by "artistic?"

Very artistic music (see bands on the poll) and album artwork, stage show etc. DMB would certainly not qualify, though they are good. I don't think Radiohead is really in the running for this either. I think it goes:

1) Tool
2) Pink Floyd
3) Dream Theater

It won't let me vote in the poll btw... :(... so add one vote for Tool.

Basszilla
12-22-2001, 02:55 AM
I voted for Pink Floyd because I'm listening to Dark Side of The Moon right now. Any other time I would say Dream Theater.

12-22-2001, 12:20 PM
So my vote is (based on given choices):
1) King Crimson
2) Dream Theater (Influenced by everyone, check out track 6 on SFAM at 8:16 about to hear them get their Zappa on)
3) Tool (not a big Tool person, but every once in a while is o.k.)

Other artists that I think deserve to be on the list (in one way or another):
The Beatles (like them or not, they started something)
Frank Zappa
Yes (even though some lyrics can be sortta cheesy and Jon Anderson's voice gets on my nerves after a while)
Emerson, Lake, and Palmer (Brain Salad Surgery)
Walter/Wendy Carlos ("I made a Double album that is nothing but noise, arn't I artistic!")

So to add to the post above this one, I think Nine Inch Nails would be my fouth choice, but they are a little like Tool for me. A little goes a long way.

Dream Theater definetly.

They are simply amazing!

thelitguy
12-22-2001, 01:03 PM
My vote went to Radiohead...

Their album covers and sleeves all deserves to be in a muesuem. Their music is very expiramental, which is basically what makes me consider a band to be artistic (Such as Roadside Monument, and The Juliana Theory).

Scott
12-22-2001, 01:08 PM
first thought was Pink Floyd, but then I decided Radiohead. Although travis seems to disagree, I think that their music is very artistic, leaning more to the layered side of music (i.e. starting with something, adding something, and so on)

Travis

*ACK!* Only 2 for Pink Floyd?? One for Dream Theater?? None for King Crimson? Man, that is sad :(

guyforGod
12-22-2001, 02:42 PM
1. DT
2. Tool
3. Pink Floyd

not that i'm really "into" any of these three.... its just the way i see them.

I didn't even see King Crimson up there. It's too hard to pick between 3 of my favorite bands (Pink Floyd, King Crimson and Dream Theater)

Adam

It seems like all the progressive rock is the most creative. You know why? It doesn't use a formula. That's why all their songs are unique.

from the list, i'd have to say Pink Floyd. but i think Calibretto 13 is the most original, creative band ever. they do things no other band does, you cannot classify their stlye because no one else does anything like them.
and then Bob Dylan. he's original.

nestamanchris
12-24-2001, 09:27 AM
BTW, I wasn't serious on the DMB thing.

Out of the bands listed I meant to vote for Dream Theater, but I realized I accidentally voted for Led Zeppelin. They're a great band but aren't my top pick on this poll.

yes, i've heard the Violent Femmes. Calibretto 13 uses "ska" upstorkes which the Femmes never used(that i know of), more creative drums, better instrumentaly(they have more solos*creative ones*) and Joe Whiteford(C13'S vocalist/guitarist) does more with his voice. their all-around style and variance is very creative and original.

Pick it up!
12-25-2001, 03:56 PM
by the way, in an interview Calibretto 13 said they had never heard a Violent Femmes song until after they had formed and recorded.

I was just thinking of "rock" groups. I like Weather Report, my favorite CDs are Heavey Weather and the first CD with the original lineup. As much as I like Weather Report, I'm more of a Mahavishnu Orchestra person. The first time I heard Birds of Fire I was completly blown away! It sounded like four people playing whatever they wanted. The idea of stacking time signatures had never occured to me until I heard that CD. I also like Return to Forever, as they fall somewhere between Mahavishnu and Weather Report.

THE MOST ARTISTIC BAND IS TANTRUM OF THE MUSE !!! FROM THE ALBNUM COVER TO THE colorful choice of lyrics are just engripping. either you love them or you hate them pretty much. As for the live show I think the music alone and seeing them play and sing is an art enough. adios

"BrooksB"
01-11-2002, 11:47 PM
i'd have to say radiohead because they do some maniacally cool artistic stuff on everything from OK Computer on-- especially with Kid A and Amnesiac-- i love how they just deny song structure in most of those songs-- it says a lot artistically to me

First off, I'm not really familiar with some of these bands. My First thought was Pink Floyd, but then I thought: Hey, they just got so drugged up that they did something different. So, i decided to go with Tool. I think they are the most creative and artistic, of the ones that i know.
other creative/ artisitic bands: Phish, Finger 11.
I like Calibretto 13, and they are very original, but I wouldn't put them on this list. Their lead singer has a punk voice, they play a lot of 3 to 4 chord punk songs, and aren't very "sophisticated" lyrically. But don't get me wrong, i think they are original and I like them. And, technically, they are Acoustic Punk.

Dave Matthews Band is very orginal and artistic. They have incredible music ability and are able to mix together instruments that would usually have no place in a band together. Unlike that TOOL or NIN crap, you can hear music... not just a "BOSS- SUPER DUPER WILD CRAZY DEATH SUICIDE MURDER BLOOD GORE ULTIMATE METAL DISTORTION" pedal through a peavy 5150 with a dude screaming about his mamma beatin' him to hard. Radiohead has gone off the deep end, people kept on saying... Radiohead is SO far out! They are orginal! They have gone out of thier way to make thier music sound crazy. So the most artistic band? Anyone who can revolutionize music that streches across border lines. And stand out while standing in.

bleachedrhino
01-24-2002, 08:21 PM

True... PLEASE EXSCUSE THIS POST IF YOU FIND IT OFFENDING!!!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!
In the newspaper there was a story of a man who was an "Abstract" artist. This man who lived in Montreal, was making a new piece of art to be placed in the dowtown gallery. So he completed his work and he recieved rave reviews on his wonderful work. the use of colour and texture was incredible. After all the hooplah was finished the artist was asked when he used for the "Art".... Let's just say on a trip down POTTY lane he got a grand idea! Let's use my bodily excriments for some artwork! After people realized that this magnificent peice of art was really a piece of something else, their views on "Abstract" art were definately changed....

I consider to be Buddy Holly a very artistic artist. He was one of the first acts to make it big with only 3 memebers. Before him, most all music in a studio was written and/or arranged by someone other than the artist; he totally changed that.

Jimi Hendrix was not THE most artistic, but he was artistic. Same to the Beatles. They were not "artistic" they were revolutionary. Jimi and the Beatles started playing things like no one before them, I'm listening to castles in the sand right now, and THAT is revolutionary! the whole reverse thing? He really brought it to the forefront. Strawberry Fields? Wow... I really belive that "Art" does'nt exsist. music is something more than art. t's your soul. Everyone has heard more of the beatles than I Want To Hold Your Hand. Some of their later stuff, such as the sitar based tracks etc, is artistic yes, but it wasn't written as art. The Beatles wrote pop, although it was a far better variety of pop than we have today. They catered to the mass market, they didnt indulge their artistic whims. Although they catered very well in my opinion.

those are hardly hyper artistic songs you just named. Great songs, but......

And I do hope you arent saying that the Beatles didnt play to the mass market. Lets see, at the beginning, pure pop. As they progressed, they moved with the times for what the greatest demand was, i.e. indian influenced music etc.

BluesJunkie
01-28-2002, 01:25 PM
At the beginning I agree that they catered to the public. However, Indian music was in demand because of the Beatles. No one would have ever known who Ravi Shankar was if George Harrison hadn't taken sitar lessons from him.

Sorry to burst your bubble kid, but everyone who watches tv has heard more than one beatles song whether they know it or not. Also, there is no way to prove that you have heard more than one beatles song, especially by citing a cd title. You have Sgt. I've heard some crazy electronic stuff and some "music" that was extrememly experimental. It was written with colored squigly lines as opposed to traditional notes. And it did sound horrible. I guess pushing sound to it's limits can be artistic, but how artistic is something that becomes intelectual as opposed to emotional.

I have only heard a little bit of Radiohead's latest stuff and IMO it sounds horrible. I guess you could say it is an aquired taste, but I'm not about to go out of my way to listen to it.

If you all have tracks that you think are their best, or your favourite (yeah, I'm writing it the non-American way) I'd like to see a list so I can download them just to check them out.
