What do you guys think of the newsboys' work since the departure of lead singer John James and lyricist Steve Taylor? Each of these people contributed something that became very well-known of the newsboys, a characteristic vocal styling, and amazingly funny and insightful satirical lyrics.
Initially after buying the microphone album, i thought their work had suffered because of this, but since Ive reconsidered

I must say that the lyrics have actually not changed all that much, just listen to the song "who?" on Shine: The Hits -- excellent stuff that showcases clever lyrics once again. I think they are just as strong as ever, and Newsboys fans have nothing to worry about at all. :D

It pretty much goes without saying the Newsboys wouldn't be where they are now without Steve Taylor.

But I said it anyway.

Just read the lyric sheet of Take Me To Your Leader and then Love Liberty Disco. You'll notice something. One's good, and the other is Love Liberty Disco.

But you gotta still love 'em.

Haha, very good Peg! Harsh but probably true! :)

I actually got the chance to hear John James speak on a couple of occasions. He rocks. People were getting saved and stuff. It was awesome!

I do agree with ya, the earlier stuff is heaps better.

I think that Taylor was a huge loss but James i didn't really care for.

Normally I would hate the loss of any band member, it just seems like a family falling apart. They may have had a bit of a loss losing Taylor or James, but i still like their music and their lyrics. i have to admit i dont have all their CD's but i have heard almost all the Newsboys' songs. If anything it has given Furler a chance to show us what he has as for as music and i see that on a lot of their songs they work together, which i think is a big strength to a band.

I agree completely with you distantcharm, and I think Furler and the others have done a really great job with their music. Its different from, but equal to, their old stuff in my opinion

I'd have to agree. While I'm not a long-standing, hardcore Newsboys fan, I got the chance to see them in concert this past week at the LCMS National Youth Gathering and they were really good. Peter Furler can easily hold his own without John james and Steve Taylor i think. just give him some time!

Actually, if you read the credits on the new songs on Shine, Steve Taylor helped with 'em.

I think Step Up To The Microphone was a good record now. I didn't before, but I just look at it different, like it's almost a different band. I just file it in with Mezzamorphis by Delirious and the other records I've gotten used to.

I refuse to comment on anything disco, even if it is the Newsboys.

disco, those white outfits, arrrggghhh!

When they toured Australia on the LLD tour they had the good sense to wear black and play only one song from the album. So there you go.

I think they've done pretty good to keep their style(although over the years it's changed alot but still had a "Newsboys feel" about it), and although I liked it with John James doing lead vocals more so than Furler, Pete does a pretty good job filling the lead singer position.
