If someone were to walk up to you and give you $1000 to upgrade your piano or keyboard rig... what would you buy? Anything out there that is giving you G.A.S.? (Gear Acquisition Syndrome.. for those who are confused ;) )

I would probably get myself a really nice Barbetta amp. Either that or a good set of studio monitors... so I could run in stereo.

1)Either an Acoustic Upright if I could find a cheap one,
2)or a SP88 Kurzwiel Stage Piano + a module to go with it. Oh yes, also an amp of course. I don't know if that would come in under 1000 though...
I would want it in my room, of course, seeing as we have a regular one for everybody.
:D A piano in my room... that'd be great!

Not likely. If you go with the WEIGHTED version of the SP-88 (the SP-88X), then you couldn't even get the keyboard for under $1000.... much less a module and an amp. But, if you go with a used non-weigthed SP-88, a used Roland JV-1010 module (nice, and cheap), and maybe a Roland KC-100 amp... you might be able to come close to $1000.

Just some thoughts... I don't know if you really needed to know any of that or not. :)

Used stuff:
Yamaha TX-7
Roland D-50

New stuff:
a MIDI kit for my MG-1
a PAiA Fatman
a set of MIDI Bass Pedals
a small, cheap sound system (Head, 2 speakers)

Was that supposed to be a DX-7, by any chance?? ;)

Nope, the TX-7 is the module. I've already got a DX-7, but it only holds 32 patches. Having the TX would double that.

ahh.... cool. I had never heard of the TX-7. I guess you learn something new every day! :D

I don't really like the DX-7... we used to have one for the church and while it was ok, it goes against my weighted keyboard philosephy.

Keyboard prices: fooey! Do you know of a cheap weighed keyboard?(i dont need any of this stuff, but its fun to dream).

Actually.... I should have been a little more clear. What I called a "non-weighted SP-88" is actually SEMI-weighted. It's really a nice feeling board... I've played around on one a few times before. The SP-88X is FULLY weighted. Soo... that's the difference. Oh... and the SP series is about the cheapest weighted keyboards you're gonna find.

I'd get myself a humidity regulator for my grand piano. I live in the North and the changes of humidity are making me nervous! I think they're really expensive, but $1000 should do it!

I love my DX-7, but I am not a "real" piano player. I am a much better "keyboard" player (though not really!). Organs, synths, etc. are where I do my best work. If you take the time to learn the DX-series synths, you find out exactly how powerful they are. I don't understand why people think they are so hard to use, I had it learned in about a week.

The bell and mallet sounds are the best I have heard out of a keyboard, and I have made some pretty nice Hammond patches, as well as Rhodes and Wurlitzer Piano patches.

The "real" pianos do stink though!

Ah- Just found out that the SP-100 is 800$(in interstatemusic catalog), has hammer action(semi-weighted) and comes with it's own voices!
That and a cheap speaker would definatly weigh in at 1000.

The "real" pianos do stink though!
May I ask why?

Acoustics beat synth anyday!

I think Lee was talking about the real piano sounds on the DX-7..... not real pianos in general. I could be wrong though..... :D

I would get another Alesis Keyboard right now I have an Alesis QS8 and I love it so I think an Alesis or a Roland.

I'd give the money back unless it was for my guitar. I don't want a keyboard.

Yeah, but I play the Keyboard, Guitar, Drums, and Bass so it doesn't really matter what one I get.

It's usually not good to have two of the same brand of keyboard. You'll usually end up with a bunch of duplicate or very similar sounds. If you were to go with a Roland, however, you'd have a very large, very varied set of sounds.
