A cool idea..... but we'd need some help!

I'm trying to find some people who can sequence songs (either in midi, or NoteWorthy Composer files...... NWC is a downloadable sequencer that can be found at www.noteworthycomposer.com) for a "piano/keyboard tab" section to this site. Basically we would have sequences of piano parts to songs that people have recorded..... and you could download them and print them up (in sheet music form!), like the guitar tabs. So here's the questions............

1) How many of you know HOW to sequence stuff????? Do any of you use NWC by any chance???

2) How many of you who can sequence would be willing to help "tab" out some songs occasionally????

3) How many of you who CANNOT sequence (yet!) would be willing to try to learn how so they could submit stuff????

4) How many of y'all think this is a good idea???

I know how to sequence in MIDI format, so if you need help, I'll see what I can do. BTW, I'm also very good at picking out tunes w/ my ear, so that should be of some help =)

For those of you (well.... one of you right now.... hopefully some more soon) who know how to sequence.........

1) What program/hardware do you use right now????

2) Would you be able to learn how to sequence on NoteWorthy Composer so we could have a "universal" program???? Note: The main reason to do this is to be able to add the sheet music aspects of songs (such as dynamic markings and other notation markings) that cannot be added with midi.

3) Do you have a quantize function on your sequencer??? I know a lot of people would get really confused if the music wasn't quantized correctly :)



And for those of you who don't know how to sequence......

1) I take it you all play keyboard/piano??

2) Do you own a keyboard??? If so, does it have MIDI ports on the back???? An "In" and an "Out" MIDI port???

3) Would you be willing to invest in a approximately $15-25 cable so you can record midi on your computer????

4) Go download NoteWorthy Composer and see if it makes any sense to you........ Note: You do not have to have a keyboard hooked up to your computer to record songs...... but if you don't have one, you have to enter each note step-by-step...... but then again, sometimes that is easier anyway..... as you don't have to worry about making mistakes while playing! :)

Like I said...... the cool thing about NWC is that is very easy to use even WITHOUT a keyboard hooked up.... you can enter full music scores from your computer's keyboard. So, if you know what you play for a song...... you can program it in.

Lets see how this goes...... anyone else out there interested?

Those of you who would like to learn how to sequence......... why don't y'all go download NWC and try to "tab" out a song, WITHOUT using midi or a keyboard.... this is actually the easiest way to do it!
Basically.... to enter a note, you move the cursor on the staff with the arrow keys and press enter....... to add a note to a chord, you move the cursor where you want it and press CTL+enter. To change the length of a note.... use the buttons on the numeric keypad.... for dotted notes, press the period on the pad.... for flats and sharps use 7 8 and 9 on the pad..... for a rest, press the space bar.
To make a clef on the staff, press C...... for a time signature, press G.... for key signature, press K..... and for a tempo setting, press T. That should get you started on the basics of sequencing....... let's see how this goes, I found it fairly easy to learn..... I'm hoping y'all will too.
A couple more things to "finish up" songs...... go to File - Info and type in a title...... save the file as BOTH a NWC and MIDI file...... And then send it to me!!!(pianoman_ns@yahoo.com) :) Really though, I want to see how it works..... and see if y'all got it all "right"........... I'm really hoping this turns out to be something that would work, that would be REALLY COOL!!

I would be willing to do all of that, although i don't have time right now, I do have a keyboard with a midi hookup, just not a cable, i can get one for $10.

I've got a keyboard, a cable, and a computer, and just a little bit of knowledge on sequencing - basically just a really good book that I reference for everything. The problem is my computer - it has no MIDI port on it

Hey Nate, do you have a joystick port???? As long as your computer is MIDI-compatible (can play .mid files, basically) and you have a joystick port, that's all you need................ many companies make a cable that has a MIDI in and a MIDI out jack on one end, connecting to a joystick 15-pin connector on the other end. This is all you need to record stuff from your keyboard (and of course a sequencing program, like NWC) Another solution would be a "MIDI Interface" (these are a bit more expensive though)...... these usually plug into the serial or USB port on your computer and can provide you with 1-8 pairs of MIDI in and out's.

I think I forgot to explain this to everybody else...... so please nobody go out and buy just a regular midi cable (with midi connectors on BOTH ends) and then say "HEY! KeyboardFreak told me this would work!"......... you have to have a special cable most of the time..... or an interface.

I was gonna post a link to a joystick-to-midi cable and a MIDI interface...... but I couldn't find either one!! Anyway.... I know they both exist... go to either a RadioShack or a Guitar Center..... they'll know what to get, if you want to see what I'm talking about. But don't pay more than like $20 for the cable or probably about $50 for the interface if you do decide to get one. I'm sure I'll find one eventually.

This isn't the best price you can find on a joystick-to-midi cable..... and it would be nice to have one longer..... but just so you can see what I'm talking about. It's the one on the bottom left.......

I've got a MIDI cable with 5-pin connectors ("MIDI") on both ends that I use for rigging up the pair of keyboards I sometimes use here. The organ sounds on my master keyboard are killer, but the instrument has weighted action to play like a piano (which is really nice for piano parts), so when I need an organ, I hook up a buddy's Korg workstation with cheap plastic keys and real organ action and play those keys through the master board's sound...

I guess that if I got one of those cables, I'd be all set then... I'll see what happens.

I'm up for that - it'd be great to have a christian piano bit on the site - its usually always guitar tab, some keyboard would be nice!

a brill idea; I've got the kit for sequencing,, but unforunately keyboard skills aren't superb, but I'd give it a go once in a while!
