TAIT Tait was the best of the three I think because his lyrics were from the heart and I really like the style of "Empty." When I first got it, I couldn't take it out of my CD player. Kmax was... well... no comment. He's got some good songs, but let's just not go there. As for Toby, I gto his wth the new Third Day CD, and I think the 3rd Day CD was better... sorry!

Okay...here is Jason's reviews of all three. The ratings are out of a possible 5 smileys

Tait - :) :)
They only get two smileys. When you put together a band with a former Petra member, his brother, and Pete Stewart, I expect a harder disc. I did not get the rock that I expected Tait to give us..I only got the pansy pop-rock that everyone is doing. I was expecting a disc filled with stuff like Alibi, not a disc that sounds likes a bad Amy Grant remix (Loss for Words...listen to Grant's Lucky One).

KMax - :) :) :) + 1/2
I just got this one from my girlfriend for Christmas. It is a fusion of all sorts of different world sounds. He uses all sorts of instruments and really shows off his vocal capacity. I absolutely love this CD...especially Existence (look at my signature).

TobyMac - :) :) :) :) + 1/2
Sorry...i can't give it 5 smileys because it is notr a consistentr song CD. The interludes actually detract from the feel of the CD somewhat. Although, I do have to say that Truett is WAY CUTE on Tru-Dog. Pete Stewarft lays down the guitar he should have done on Tait's CD on Momentum, Yours, and a few other tracks. J-Train is a phenomenal song featuring the one and only Kirk Franklin rapping and preachin' it with Toby. Far and away the best solo disc from any one of the three.

That's my two cents (okay...maybe three) on the matter. Talk to ya'all later. God bless!

sorry but i just cant get into the whole rapping thing. didnt like them before Jesus Freak. mac messed up by doing that in my book. dont get me wrong, i can listen to Christian rap and hip hop, but i really dont like it comin from him.

kmax has a great voice. but the style is just not what i wanna turn up when goin down the road in my car. i like most of the songs, but cant listen to too many of them in a row without it getting annoying.

tait just speaks to me. he's into more acoustic rock and such. but i love what he does with Oh My Lord... the old spiritual rocks!

Nicely said, sheep! I'm not a huge fan of the pre-Jesus Freak stuff, but there are some really good songs on F@L that I have on "Intermission."

Here's more more in depth review of all the albums:

Kevin Max-- Stereotype Be
RATING::confused::confused::confused: (3 unsure stars)
I really expected a LOT more from Kmax, but I guess this is all I get. I guess I just don't connect to his music and poerty. I think the poetry dulls the sensation for me. "Return of the Singer" would be a LOT better without that stupid noise in the background that goes from beginning to end (do you have any idea what I mean?) Existence is my favorite song on the album. I kind of like that oreiental sound at the beginning and the vibe of the song is AWESOME. "Be" is pretty good. "Angel With No Wings" is alright, but it's a little more selfish and I didn't realyl expect that from him. No comment on "Shaping Space" to tell you the truth. There's nothing wrong with it, but it's just not what I was looking for. Um... "Dead End Moon"? He's really an ispirational guy and I like him for that, but this is a little weird. If I ever meet him, I am going to HAVE to tell him NEVER EVER EVER to sing that high again because it's just... not right. That brings the rating down a little for this song. "Union of the Soul" is my least fave because I don't like the whole poetry thing. I only liked the one off of Supernatural. "The Secret Circle" is very unique. The name Ellesun just bugs me for some reason. "I Don't Belong" is another girl song, and I don't like it coming from Kmax, but it's still a pretty cool song. "Blind" is not a really good song, sorry. That's all I can say about it. "On and On" is pretty cool in a Kmax sorta way. "Her Game" sounds way too weird. I can't stand to listen to it. "Deconstructing Venus" is another weird but almost cool song. "I Went Over The Edge of the World" is a bad way to end an album... sorry.
Last thoughts: If dc Talk's next album sounds like this, they can say goodbye to one fan... Kmax is just a little too centered around girls than God. If you look at the lyrics, "girl" and "baby" appear way too many times for my comfort.

Tait-- Empty
Rating: :D:D:D:D 1/2
Okay, I admit the cover freaked me out a little at first, but good thing I still bought it! This is an album everyone needs in their collection. I saw them perform live and they were SO good! "Alibi" is a nice way to start out the album. If you're gonna start out with "Alibi," don't follow up with "Loss for Words." It's a great song and it's one of my faves, but it just seems out of place here. "Bonded" is alright, but I was expecting something harder than this. "All You Got" is pretty cool and I love it, but I think "Alibi" should have been the first radio single because this isn't as powerful as "Alibi." "Spy" is another of my faves, and if you see this song when it's played live, you will get blown away. This is one of my faves too. "Talk About Jesus" is a song from a pretty much atheist point of view about Christians around him who weren't really good Christians. "American Tragedy" is a song that really shows Michael's heritage and is an awesome song. "Looking for You" is a deep song. "Altars" is my all time favorite on the album. "Tell Me Why" is a deep song too. "Carried Away" is cool too. "Empty" is another really cool song that I like. "Unglued" was the one song that I couldn't stop listening to. All it is is a beautiful song that's just Michael and Michael W. Smith on piano. If you're dealing with something hard in your life, this is a song you've got to pop into your CD player.
Final Thoughts: Best of the 3!!!!!

TobyMac-- Momentum
RATING: :p :p :p 1/2
Like I said, I never really enjoyed the pre-JF stuff. Still, I saw this as a chance to get three dc Talk CD's in a row, and I wanted to support them all that I could. I think that the weird voice thing is BONZIbuddy. I like the rock part of it, but I only listen to a few songs. This is really cool and everything, but it's not what I really wanted from Toby. These are my final thoughts and I can't really give an in-depth review.

When do ya think they'll come out with a new group album? My guess is 2003.

Kevin's album is defiently the most artistic......and i enjoy almost every song on the album.......but i would have to say my personal fav is Tait's album......i especially love.....American Tragedy and Talk about Jesus. Toby's album is just not what i am into.......i mean i like the title track but really its too homi-ish for me

I love Tait's album. I was even luckey enough to get a copy a few weeks before it's offical release. I definitely sense a lot of Pete Stewarts' influence on the record. at times, its very reminiscent of Stewarts solo record (which is also awesome :)).

My turn :D

Tait-
I absoutely loved this CD! By far the best of the solos! Spy, Alibi, Altars, and Talk About Jesus are my top pics. It was here I started to like Pete Stewarts music and got his CD (which is amazing btw). The couple of minutes of just music at the end of the album (secret song ;) ) are spectacular.

Toby- :) :)
Im not much of a rap fan, but since Sombody's Watchin Me and Extreme Days were songs I liked I got the album to see what else there is. Now I really like some songs, but couldnt stand others. Irene, Yours, In The Air, and Momentum were some of my favs. I guess I really didnt know what to expect form Toby in this CD.

Kmax:confused: :) :D
At first I only bought this album for Existence (the song was stuck in my head for a couple of months and i needed a fast remedy). When I get a new CD, I usually listn to the whole thing and not jsut the tracks at the begining. I thought this was the biggest waste of money because I didnt like anything! After a few times through the album, I started to get used to the music and now I like almoast every song. This was my second favorite of the solos. Oh, and has anybody heard the secret song at the end of this CD? Its awesome! One of my favorite songs of all time.

I hope that they start makin albums as a group again, because thats when theyre the best.

I liked Tait's album immensely when I first bought it. I also liked a number of songs on Kevin's CD. I was nothing but smiles when I heard Toby's CD. I liked Tait's most for replayability, I liked Toby's best out of the box (I have acquired a liking for hard-hitting rock, which he does quite well), and I liked Kevin's for those quiet times during the night. The best part of it is that you're comparing apples and oranges - their music is so diverse. I just praise God that He found them before the secular market did.

All three of the albums have their own personal little signature sound to them that each member of dc Talk brings to the group. That's what makes dc Talk such the wonderful three-headed monster that it is. That's what makes their sound when they come together so unique. I think each album really has the characteristics that I would see in each one of them when you listen to them come together. Toby has his really strong hip-hop influence coming out in his album, while Tait has the nice, smooth and mellow sound that he always supplies. Then, K-Max brings his overall funkiness that he's so well known for that comes out in his album. I think it really just all depends on who your fav. member of dc Talk is. For me, personally, it just depends on what kind of mood I'm in as to what type of sound I'm wanting to listen to at that time. All three of them, though, in my mind are very strong and very good. Well, that's my $.02 anyways . . .

i havent heard any kmax songs, but i've heard momemtem and it stinks. i have the extreme saturday cd and thats where i heard momentem. i just dont like rap. taits album is good because its got that mix of soft, medium, and hard rock. my favorite song is tradgedy, but spy is cool to. i have jesus freak and my cousin got me a mix cd. he's got a cd burner so he gave me a cd with supernatural and sprit in the sky and luv is a verb and some others. all i have to say is, tait rules

Ok, my ratings are as follows:

Stereotype Be (Kevin Max)

     2 cools + 3 huhs?

This album was very good; Kevin has a spectacular voice. But...but...it was...weird. I think he should've stuck with the same poetic style that he used in Treason and Sea (which makes sense) and I Went Over the Edge of the World (which doesn't make sense but sounds cool anyway, plus the rhythm and feel of it almost manage to makes sense on their own). The obscure strangeness that permeated so many of the songs just...bothered me. Dead End Moon is my favorite and the only set of lyrics that really makes sense to me. I realize that he's trying to leave the segues up to the listener, but...yeah. It was strange.

Empty (Michael Tait)

     4 cools + 1 huh?

An excellent album, with a wide appeal. This is one I would not hesitate to recommend to someone I didn't know that well. Almost anyone could enjoy it, I think. The lyrics are somewhat poetic without being freakily obscure, and the music rocks. But I gave it a Huh because I absolutely did NOT get the point of Spy, and of course the first hidden track speaks for itself.... (Kneecaps? What the hey?) I have to say I was laughing really hard though...

Momentum (Toby Mac)

     3 cools + 2 huh?

If you like hip-hop, it's good. If you like really really loud hard rock, it's even better. If you like those computer-generated voices and listening to cute little kids try to rap, buy this album. I found quite a few of the songs annoying in the extreme, but I found I liked the title track quite a bit, as well as Extreme Days and In the Air. I think an appreciation for Toby's style is just as necessary to the enjoyment of this album as an appreciation for Kevin's is necessary to the enjoyment of Stereotype Be. Toby can be really weird sometimes... :kspin: ....but it's a very well-put-together album.

I think dcTalk should've never broken up. It's like that bundle of sticks metaphor. One is broken easily. A bundle is hard to break. Deep.

I've read through all of the threads that you guys have posted. You've had some pretty strong arguments.

Tait was good, he's got a great talent for songwriting. And no, it doesn't have to be all hard music. If you're one of those people who listens to hard music all the time...you're a freak. I'm not saying that bands like Project 86 are bad, but God said "Make a joyful noise..." Not make a joyful scream and yell. I admit that I do like Alibi and Spy, but I like all the other songs just as well.

Kevin Max is what he's always been. He writes with his emotions, what's going on around him, and uses his imagination. I look up to him for that. He's a great songwriter. Just leave it at that. His voice is awesome. Some people may not like it, but he's got talent.

Toby was excellent. Back before I listened to tobymac (I used to be all Newsboys), I hated rap. Now I listen to them all the more becuase I love his hip-hop/rock flare. Momentum was a great cd, but I do agree that the interludes take away from the cd. Yours and Love Is In The House are very well written.

That's my argument. Plain and simple. No one's better, no one's worse. They're 3 people, who come together as one group.

And for those of you who said something about dc talk splitting up. Ever wonder why they called their greatest hits "Intermission"? They're taking a break...don't worry they'll be back soon.

Toby's was by far the best
