It was very hard to pay $250 for a new iPod. But after using it today, I say its worth it.

This thread is just for those of you on the edge, not sure whether it would be wasteful to buy a new iPod or not. The iPod videos are definately worth it.

On the other hand, you may want to hold out on buying a Nano. Yeah they are small and come in cool colors, but save a few extra bucks and get a 30 GB iPod. Or just wait until the price goes down on the Nano. Which it will. It always does. Remember...just when you think it isnt possible...Apple will make a better iPod. So make sure your upgrade is worth it. I had the first 20 GB model with the click wheel...if you have anything later, just wait until the next model is released next year.

Hope this helped someone. (Please dont use this thread as a debate/argument/Macvs.PC war vehicle)

I paid $280 for mine in June. I'm kind of mad I didn't wait until now to buy one. I really like it. It's small, sleek, and is seamless with iTunes. If I hadn't used the music store so much, I might have gotten an alternative. I really do like my iPod though.

I hate the iPod Nano. It's insanely stupid to me. I hate hate hate it.

I do love iPods though.

Care to elaborate why you think nanos are stupid?

I'm still on my 3 year old 4G iPod. No color screen. No video. 20 GB (which is entirely too small for my music collection). I want to upgrade to a video iPod soon. No gapless playback is pretty annoying, and it's a bit frustrating that they can't just release a software update that fixes that on all the iPod models instead of having to buy a whole new iPod, but I guess it's not that easy of a fix (or Apple is just greedy... which I suppose is entirely possible). Of course, there's all the rumors and talk about a touch screen video iPod coming out soon. I think if one comes out and it's within my price range, I'll definitly get one and give this 4G to my parents or my sister or something.

I seriously doubt a touch screen ipod will come out...what possible touch features would you use?

Besides, it would cost too much and the screen would be easily broken.

No...the next thing I see coming out is a wireless iPod. It has no storage. It connects through satellite to your music collection at home, you go anywhere and open up any video, song, or picture on your computer. ...thats just my prediction though...

Nanos are ridiculous and stupid to me. I have no use for something the size of two of my fingers to play a fraction of my music so I have to reload it constantly to keep a good selection of music on it. When I am listening to music I listen to a very, very wide variety. And I have linux on my iPod so I use some very high bitrate songs so they don't sound like crap, so 1-2 gigs equals a tiny amount of music. It's not fun to constantly be switching music out.

i agree that a touch screen would be kinda pointles on an ipod, it's not like it would be an improvement over what they have.
and i don't exactly see a wireless ipod either, especially since so many people (like myself) use them for external hard drives as well as music players. now, an ipod that can connect to your music at home, yet still has a decent chunk or storage space would be pretty cool.

andrew, exactly what bitrate are you using?

Generally I use 320. I don't usually use vbr at all.

How about for a true video iPod? Imagine an iPod the same size as it is now, but the screen takes up the entire front face for widescreen movies. Now that iTunes sells movies, this is the next logical step, as the screen on the current video iPods is pitifully small for the purpose of watching movies. The Sony PSP kills it in comparison. And I'm not the only person who thinks this is going to happen, as likely all the major Mac rumors sites are saying it's going to happen, likely early to mid 2007.

As for the wireless iPod, I don't see that happening anytime soon. Is that kind of satellite technology even feasible? Though Apple has been known to surprise. Personally I'm hoping for bluetooth technology soon for syncing and headphones.

Ok. Just wanted a little explanation instead of just saying, "Nanos are stupid." Obviously, they're not stupid for everyone, since not everyone wants or needs so much storage space.

I do not see much of a point of getting a Nano either, but I guess some people would have use for it. I am getting a 30GB with the brighter screen, etc. from freeiPods.com. It is supposed to ship in about 2 weeks.

Actually, they're surprisingly durable, especially the new ones.

Yeah, those nanos are beasts. You can do some nutso stuff to them without breaking them.

Next? No, no, no... Technology just isn't there yet for everyday consumers. I see where you're getting this idea from... but satellite radio is one thing -- they only need to brodcast x-amount of channels (whatever they are supporting) all over the place. From what I understand, it is very much a 1 way transmission from space to the players... something rather basic compared to attempting to setup a 2-way, high-demand, satellite connection.

To support any sort of music sharing, it'd require broadband on both ends (something many people still don't have yet, though support it growing). Wireless is far from perfect -- so far, only 'hot spots' exist for wifi... though there is a developing wireless that covers a broader area (maybe uses wireless towers?) Even still, it's expensive and rare to come across.

So, until you have near 100% highspeed wireless internet coverage of the US, don't expect anything like this (or at least nothing 'mainstream'). Will something like this happen within the next 10 years? Quite possibly. As the web develops, you may even see 'internet' media players, where you upload your music once and load it in a player in your browser anywhere.

My $.02 on it anyway...
