Do you prefer american acts or the Brits. I actually prefer British music, but America rarely likes well crafted pop tunes, so I am always out of luck. Travis, for example, is great, but America won't eat them up.

someone with taste! oh and if you ever come to the UK, or meet anyone from there, England is a country, Scotland is a country (travis are from scotland), Wales is a country, and Northern Ireland is a country. England is not the whole thing. thats called the UK.
anyway, rant over. What other British bands do you like? Stone Roses? If you like them, i will be impressed.

I guess I usually prefer American bands (probably cuz I'm American) but there are some great British bands that I love to listen to (ex: Beatles and other British invasion bands, Delirious, etc)

when it comes to rock, america wins. when you are talking indie, uk wins. when it comes to weird dance acts (daft punk, air) france wins.

I don't like those weird dance song things.
Brits made Orange amps... but then againe we have Mesa/Boogie....
As far as music I would say American- because I am American.
One really important question-
WHY DO BRITS SING LIKE AMERICANS?????
Big pet peeve.

I would pick a Mesa/Boogie Triple Rectifier over and Orange amp any day. Also, look at all the great rock to come out of America. At the Drive-In, Jimmy Eat World, Juliana Theory, Tool...all England has going for them is/was the Beatles, but that's nothing little.

ENGLAND DOES NOT EQUAL UK. ahem. bloomin americans.
and that only beatles thing is a load of rubbish. how many british bands have you even heard? not many i'd bet. and you may have forgotten about radiohead.

Okay, I forgot about Radiohead. I can't believe that. Such an important band. I've actually heard quite a few British bands. There was one that I really liked and they're starting to gain popularity in America, but I can't remember their name.
And I know the difference between UK and England. Trust me, I argue with people about it all the time. None of my friends quite understand the concept that England is a country in the UK...it's not the UK itself. Oh yeah...if we're gonna talk about bnds from the UK...what about The Proclaimers?

The comprehensive list of great (secular) American music. Ok then, not conclusive, but imho... ;)
Ben Folds Five
Ben Folds
REM
Eels
Moby
And that's yer lot. (Although I might think of some more later...)
Many American bands put out some great tunes, but are generally too repetitive, boring or just "made for MTV, do we care what it actually sounds like?" to be any good. Travis sadly have slipped into that category, and it appears the Stereophonics are too. :(
Great British bands...
Radiohead
Manic Street Preachers
Stone Roses
Primal Scream
Muse
Spiritualized
Blur
Super Furry Animals
Morcheeba
Propellorheads
Portishead
Oasis were good once upon a time, as were
Travis and
The Stereophonics
So I prefer British music, but anything good is ok. The aforementioned Daft Punk and Air are also great. I'm not biased by nationality - I just don't tend to like American bands.

Sorry, about the Travis thing, I never really made a mental note of where they were from. I should be careful... At Urbana I met a guy from Scotland and I understand how England is rubbish :) . By the way I seem to like the praise music from across the pond better too, humph... I wonder if I was in the UK I'd like American music better.;)

I am ashamed to bear the name "Travis," at least after hearing the band...

fran healy can write some pretty good lyrical hooks, he's starting to really grow as a songwriter. Needs a good musician to help him develop his musical style though. Andy Dunlop (the lead guitarist and banjo player on the new album), isnt a domineering enough player, he needs to do what the Manics do and write the music, and let Fran do the lyrics.
Oh, and revolution, that is a pretty good list of bands you've got there, although you are missing a lot of American bands, they arent that bad! But judging by your list, you'd probably like Turin Brakes, Elbow and Starsailor a LOT. Very good bands. If you want to find out about good indie stuff like that you should go to
http://www.Qonline.co.uk/
its the website for the best music mag in the uk, although they tend to put too high a rating on hiphop and other stuff.

I've heard their names a lot, but being in Japan has the singular drawback of not having too much access to new music, unless it's chart rubbish on the radio. I'd like to check them out, but I'm also stuck with a heap of a computer, so even mp3s are out of the question :(
And by the way, I forgot Pulp  :o

U2 are good, but not as good as everyone makes out. Pop was awful

Can we just agree on something?
I swear to you truly, they (Brits & Yanks/Americans) are equally good.
BUT
In my opinion,
NZ bands are the best.
e.g.
*Parachute Band (who toured the U.S. & the Americans want them back)
*Considering Lily
*Form
*The Kumquats (I love them and you shouldn't want to squash them before you even hear their music)
*The LADS (OH YEAH BABY) (Dawson's Creek used their song "Forever Smoochy Girl")
*Split Enz (and who can live without them???)
*Michael Turner
*Darlene Adair
*Anika Moa (and if you say you never heard of her I'll squash you)
*The Invasion Band
*Drinkwater
*If you say you never heard of PHIL JOEL I really will squash you
*Syrus
*Barak Zamar
*yeah, and the list goes on.
So stop arguing.

Thumbs up for both. Even Tool has a member from England (Justin Chancellor- bass).

Oh Scottyboy
SQUASH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anika Moa is one of the greatest Maori Musicians of all time. Softer stuff, though. I very much think it is good. Her music is really acoustic, guitar-based.
She's been in the US recording in a big studio over there. However it's not Christian. Definately incredibly talented and VERY PRETTY...and can also boast of a brilliant voice!!!!!! I love her stuff!!!
Enough already...I will agree with Travis and say..."EQUAL!!!"
US has Michael W. Smith, England has Deliriou5?, who's complaining as long as we get to listen to both???
I'm not whining as long as I have ears!!!
South-African stuff is MAJORLY excellent too (there I go again-excellent)
Tree63 & all that!!!!!!!!
Erika the Kiwi who has flown!
