Just curous, what kind of bass strings does everyone prefer to use, and why?

As for me, I like to use the Fodera "Diamonds" series strings. If you look them up, the description made by the manufacturer, states that they are a bright sounding string. This is very true with these, and I mostly like to play with a bright tone. But when I need or want to, they also allow me to get a really great deep, and meaty sound when I turn my tone nob down. They sound great through my Nemesis. The brightness just allows for this sweet sounding jazzy tone in all of the ranges of the bass. Not just the mid to upper where most bright sounding strings allow.
I also like some of the Ernie Ball series stings.

Anyway, just curious.

I love DR Hi-Beams, but I tend to go through them quickly. They do keep their tone for a long time, so you can keep the old ones as spares. I also like Rotosounds, they have more of a rock sound to them. I've had the same set on my P-Bass for about 6 years, nice dead sound.

LOL!!! And I thought I was bad. When I first got my bass, I never changed out the strings. So I had this bass for 3 1/2 years with the original cheesy strings on it. And I'm not even sure what kind of strings they were. I never thought to ask :) I've been through 2 pair of the Fodera Diamonds I talked about earlier in about 2 1/2 years. They have a good life span.

I keep that same set on on purpose. That bass also has super high action and foam under the bridge. I need to get some flatwounds to go on it.

someone asked what kind of strings pittman uses, he uses elixers, they are great, quite expensive compared to other strings(list $80, i can get them at the local store for about 40). they last like 3 times as long as ernie balls, have a protective layer around them called a "poly-web" very nice and great playability, pretty much throw them on any bass and they will sound better than ne other strings, great lows, hi's and everything in-betweens....

i use dr hi-beams on my epiphone 5 string. i had to put the 1.20s on it to keep the low b from flappin' (unca bry HATES flappy low bs)! on my g & l 4 string, i use deam markley blue steel mediums because they last forever.

on a side note, has anyone out there ever broke a bass string? i need to know i am not a mutant!

Since I've been playing (1.5-2 years or so) I've used Ernie Ball's, DR Hi-Beams, Peavey Cirrus, and the factory strings that came with my bass. Of those the DR Hi-Beams have been the best by far. A good, bright (but not too bright) sound that's nice. A buddy from the alt.guitar.bass newsgroup is sending me a spare set of Elixir's that he has when he gets back from NAMM, so I'm sure I'll love those just as much, if not more.

Man, I break strings all the TIME! I'll really get into playing slap or with a pick and just rip them right off. I'm getting better, though. That's an expensive habit.

I use Dean Markley Blue Steels now. I used DR's for a while, but they go dead way to fast for me and I break those even easier than usual. The Blue Steels are a little bright at first, but they tone down pretty quickly without loosing all the brightness. They are super-meaty. Great for that hard-rockin sound. Which is exacly the sound I like to add to P&W. And they never really get muddy like most other brands I've played. They are my brand now.

Hey I broke my G doing this crazy slap run I came up with. I still haven't bought a new one either, I'm so lazy. Does anyone use flatwounds for bass? I think when I buy new strings I might try some, what do you guys think about them?

Ooooh....got the Elixir strings in the mail yesterday that I mentioned before... He only used them *once* and took them off and sent 'em to me. These things sound brand new and soooo tasty! A bit larger gauge than a I had on...E was probably .105 I think and I prolly had .100 on before. These things are sweet, but now I'm spoiled...

I your doing crazy slap things I think you be very dissapointed with flatwounds. They are not near as bright as roundwound.
