I need some help with the music of my songs. I know the key formula for major and minor chords. I just was wondering how you know when you can use the cooler chords like maj7, 2 chords, sus2, sus4.
here is the formula I know:
caps = major
lower case = minot
* = diminished
I ii iii IV V vi vii*
eg
Key of C
C Dm Em F G Am Bdim
Can someone help me understand when I can use the cooler chords.

Well, i don't know if i can really help you, but, when you're playing chords in the key of C, then you can only use the notes that are in the key of C. The key of C has no sharps,
so every chord you played, would have to not have any sharps either.
You get what i'm saying?
Sorry if i've confused you.

Suspension chords you can use just about any time you want, it doesn't matter what key you're in.
