View Full Version : Where are all the punks out there?!

Come on now... I've seen hardly any punk music mentioned here... don't get me wrong, I love hardcore, emo, rock, jazz, blues, pretty much everything under the sun, but normally the punk boys will pop up and mention some great new bands for me to look into. :D
Most of the punk bands I listen to ARE Christian, but others aren't who rock...
Good Charlotte, New Found Glory, (do MxPx, Arthur, and Cootees count as Christian? cuz they are.. but yeah), the get-up kids... hmmm... Goldfinger is good but one person kinda ruined em for me, but they're cool... the Ramones are classic... who am I forgetting here?

bleachedrhino
12-05-2001, 12:05 PM
THE OFFSPRING?! A MAJOR KOOL PUNK BAND!.......ok...just had to give them a plug....
Good Charlotte is kool, Sum 41, Ace Troubleshooter, Value Pac, and ummm......i dunno.........
ohh.....the clash is classic.....hangnail is a good Christian punk band...

A-Rok Ric
12-05-2001, 01:07 PM
Offspring is good, yeah.... not so much my style, but they're good.
Sum 41 is alright... i like their sound....
Blink 182 is a lot of people's favorites... not one of mine, but ya know, they have talent.
Clash is definitely classic... and yeah, hangnail is a good band (and Relient K, Slick Shoes, etc.)...
I thought of someone else and just forgot em again... *shrug* Headliner is a good Christian band... they're friends of mine from my town, looking for a bassist now... but they're pretty good... i'll try to find the address to their site and post it for ya.

are we talking old skool or the new stuff here?

bleachedrhino
12-05-2001, 02:48 PM
Yeah...I like Relient K too! :D
As for Blink 182....I could care less about them anymore...I used to not like them for how they acted...now I don't really like the music that they play! I really only liked Adam's Song, Man Overboard, and What's My Age Again?....I don't know that much of their older stuff (Buddha and Dude Ranch)....

What do you mean one person ruined Goldfinger for you? I am confused... they are good! NFG is good too, so are Lucky Boys Confusion, River City High, Face to Face, Mad Caddies, Lagwagon, Cooties are cool (but I didn't know they were Christian???), AFI is talented, Vandals, Pennywise (from my hometown)... all those work for me!

We're talking old skool and new, whatever...

well... my first roommate in college loved Goldfinger and listened to them ALL the time and sang along and it's a LONG story, but yeah... i really liked em a lot until it got to the point where any time i heard them, i would hear her voice along with them, so yeah... I just need a break, then they'll be cool again to me probably. :)

Lagwagon is good, so are the Vandals and Pennywise, Me First and the Gimme Gimmies are alright... I'll have to look into the other ones mentioned. :D

And yes, MxPx and Relient K rock.

Rancid has an awful singer (for punk music), Black Flag is terrible (it's basically the Henry Rollins Band)....A New Found Glory is soooo koool...Ataris is pretty kool...Pennywise is pretty kool....anyone heard of NoFX? I think they're pretty kool too!! :D
PS--> Sorry if you really like either one of the first two bands...I just don't care for em...

ChrisPeeper
12-07-2001, 10:25 PM
"Please Play This Song on the Radio" that song by Nofx is sweet. NoFX stands for: No F****** Straight Edge. Straight Edge is a radical group of people that don't do drugs, drink alcohol, or have sex. They represent themselves with an "X" hence the "X" in NoFX.

So NoFX is not a band high on my list because of their too vulgar material...but some songs are good (I also thoroughly enjoy "Don't Call Me White").

I also enjoy their witty song titles and CD titles.

Since NoFX basically is Me First and The Gimme Gimmes...they don't have bad music whatsoever... I just can't listen to it for long because of the material.

bleachedrhino
12-10-2001, 04:23 PM
hmmmmm.......so ordinarily punk eh? I thought that was what punk was all about....
a punk--> Someone who can't sing, plays no more than four chords (specifically power chords) in a song, plays a steady yet LOUD bass line, and can kill it (speed wise) on the drums.
basically....A musical genre that doesn't require any talent....even in songwriting. :D

yeah rhino is pretty much right... which is why i listen to a lot more emo-core than punk (embodyment rock on). i love the punk sound though. ok here goes... mustard plug are one of my favorite bands. (so shut up they rock lol jk) mxpx are ok. blink and sum41 suck now that (can i say this?) are in bed (they are married, no worries) with mtv and mcdonalds and all the teeny-boppers in the world today. rancid is ska (2nd wave, i think) so they're singer rocks. (sound exactly like operation ivy and the christian band the dingees, on purpose mind you). nofx _music_ is cool, although their name is pronounced "no effects" and doesn't really mean anything at all. (straight from the mouth of fat mike, from their website.) yes their songs are _very_ vulgar, especially on their new cd, which i will have no part of whatsoever. so go put the mustard plug and jimmy eat world in your player and rock out.

I like some punk. New Found Glory is cool. MxPx is cool for a band that only play four chords. Blink 182 is cool, especially their new CD. "Stay Together For the Kids" is awesome. Plus, Mark Hoppus's favorite band is Jimmy Eat World, and, as anyone who has heard Jimmy Eat World knows, they are one of the best bands ever to exist (can you believe they started as a Metallica cover band?). Saves the Day is awesome, but they're more emo-core in a lot of ways. NoFX has some really, really awesome songs...by awesome I mean funny. Goldfinger rocks. Reel Big Fish's old CD was awesome (I know, they're ska).

Also...totally off the subject of punk...anyone ever listen to Dashboard Confessional or FurtherSeemsForever?

ok i still unregistered, just too lazy to go through all that crap right now :(. but anyway, yeah mustard plug and a new found glory are two of my favorites. reel big fish have some great songs too though. mighty mighty bosstones i don't listen to much, but the songs i know are all really good. the hippos are real good ska. another good band is bowling for soup. their song "belgium" is really good. mustard plug covered a real old school ska band (50's i think) song "the freshman." (sentence makes no sence at all, too lazy to fix it.) one of my favorites. another good one is "yesterday." truthfully i can't see how anybody could dis them, but that's just me. embodyment, dogwood, jimmy eat world, mustard plug, bowling for soup, mxpx, a new found glory, thousand foot krutch, and juliana theory are all some of my favorite bands. smalltown poets's debut cd i like a lot. has a kinda emo sound to it. one my mom can listen to with me :).

ok, registered! lol, who managed to get em to put the everybodyduck cd in that avatar thing? they have some great songs! ok question: where do you put a subtitle in below your name? i was looking through the profile options and couldn't find anything.
and add calibretto 13 to my bands list :) they suck so bad, it's fun to listen to. like they suck on purpose. like their suckiness is actually what makes them good. plus their lyrics are awesome. i had "movie star" stuck in my head all day yesterday. don't you hate it when that happens...? lol thanks guys.

Mustard Plug is cool... Reel Big Fish has some pretty vulgar songs, but they have lots of musical talent. I saw them in concert (my first concert actually... I wasn't a Christian then either) and they put on a good show. Operation Ivy is fabulous... if you wanna go old skool then there is The Specials, Skankin' Pickle... the list goes on! Save Ferris was fun when they were ska (SYLSB is a GREAT anthem for all ska listeners ;) ), but they changed their sound a lot.

haha yeah, calibretto 13 is soo kool! The funniest, most original band of all time! :D "If i were an apple, hangin from a tree"
save ferris is pretty kool....i haven't heard a lot of their stuff, but it's kool.....
Weezer is most definitely in it's own category....with songs like Buddy Holly, Island in the Sun, and H*** Pipe, they might fit best in the alternative pic. :D
emo is like the really emotional kinda rock....like the kind with the slower depressive kinda sound.....or something like that....Silverchair is emo

I hate it when people are all like

"Dude, what is punk?"

"You can't define punk, flamer"

"There is no punk, dude"

"Punk is stading up for your beliefs, and like doing what you want, dude"

I don't see why people have such a hard time of defining punk... PUNK IS 4 chorded songs, played by guys in tight pants, converse shoes, tight thirft store shirts, and discolored wild hair. If punk was standing up for what you believe in...then everyone would be a punk almost. I read on another online message board that someone said that converse weren't punk anymore cause all the punks wear them and it's not cool to have a trend... if that was the case then I guess the correct punk thing to do is to make your own clothes and shoes....

Pick it up!
12-15-2001, 01:55 PM
YES! Calibretto 13 is my favorite band. they suck? no, they are one of the most original, creative, and Christ-centered bands ever. their new cd, Adventures in Tokyo comes out on march 12.
i guess they're just too original for some people, they have one of the most unique sounds ever. rock on!

timberwolf_s
12-16-2001, 12:45 PM
yeah calibretto is awesome. maybe my post was kinda confusing; what i meant to say is that calibretto 13 rocks. lol. movie star, fall away (i think it's called fall away, maybe fade), ballroom blitz, and get a life are my favorite songs.

imo, there are two parts of "punk". punk is music. (4 chorded songs, a few riffs, supersonic speed drums, and some trumpets if they're really cool  ) musically, blink 182 and sum 41 are punk (pop punk anyway), no matter what somebody says. but the other part of punk is playing your music real. either play the music to express yourself, or play it to have a good time. don't play to impress people or to get big or to make money. because then you're no different than the rappers and pop stars, who don't even write their music. when it comes to music, everything you do should just be for yourself. don't think about anyone else. outside of music, just do your thing and don't back down if people don't like it. (granted, that's to a degree) blink and sum 41 are _not_ punk. if you like converse shoes and wild hair, wear it, but only for yourself. don't do it bcause you are "punk." punk is not caring if you are way different than everyone else. but punk is not about trying to be different. punk is about not giving a care about what people label you.

Hmmm... I love emo... my favoritest (yes, I know it's not a word, I'm getting myself a college education thank you!) band ever was this emo-core band called Drag The Stick. They broke up, but they were so amazing... they were signed to Wounded Records.

I hate when people try to call my band a punk band. It's so insulting because most people know punk as 4 chord music and we have a lot of very complicated songs. And Jimmy Eat World isn't punk either. Please don't degrade them in that way.
If you people wanna know what real punk is...The Ramones, Sex Pistols, The Clash...that's real punk.

a lot of punk, including the "real" punk that i hold so dear and close to me, didn't use many chords. obviously, that is a general statement, that's all it was intended to be. punk can be manifested in many forms. different bands spun the traditional sound of "punk" and created a lot of new genres. emo evolved out of punk. jimmy eat world is a very talented emo band, that's all they have been called.
do you have any mp3's of your songs? i would love to hear some. :D thanks.

When I said that it's insulting...it came out wrong. I wouldn't care if people called us a punk band, but most people know punk as 4 chord music. That's why it sucks to be called a punk band. Also, we're not punk. We have a slight (very slight) punk influence. We sound more like Jimmy Eat World...just a lot heavier. Jimmy Eat World is absolutely incredible, by the way.

And I suppose we are all "posers" who will never be "punk" enough for the true "punks." I suppose we all need to get noserings, safety pins in our ears, mohawks, and withdraw from society.

Punk is truly the theme music for causeless anger.

Well, that revived a thoroughly dead thread. Are you calling Radiohead punk?

Admittedly though, a lot of the "punk" bands mentioned in this thread, are, by genre, pop-punk. It's simply a poppier version of punk, that's all. I don't mind pop-punk at all, but it can't really be compared to old-school Ramones, Sex Pistols, and the Clash.

haha yeah, calibretto 13 is soo kool! The funniest, most original band of all time!

To clarify, Calibretto 13 is not really original at all. Listen to the Violent Femmes from the early 80s and you will hear a much better version of what Calibretto 13 is trying to pull off, although they aren't all that bad anyway.

And I suppose we are all "posers" who will never be "punk" enough for the true "punks." I suppose we all need to get noserings, safety pins in our ears, mohawks, and withdraw from society.

Man... I had completely forgotten about this site. I don't think I've been on here for close to two years then I got an email saying someone had responded to some message I'd put out there. Wow, my taste in music has drastically changed. None of those bands I mentioned in my opening message are actually punk except for the Ramones, and I only still listen to a couple of them. Good punk bands would be like The Distillers, The Casualties, Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphy, FBS, etc. Although Dropkick and Flogging Molly are sorta borderline punk. Wow... how things change... A really good punkabilly band is The Living End; I highly recommend them. Tiger Army and The Beatsteaks-also good stuff. I'm into a lot of emo, screamo, and hardcore lately, so yeah... Poison the Well, Taking Back Sunday, Further Seems Forever, Thrice, Thursday, Fall Out Boy, Since By Man, etc. That's it. I'm out.

My last show was a punk rock extravaganza where I spent a half hour chilling in the tour RV of T.S.O.L.

Oh yeah, and I got in for free.

I've out-punked all of you all.

Plus, my brother was there, and he's an indie radio station director who writes novels. So by association, I out-indied out of you all.

I really don't think that the punk founders Ramones Sex Pistols had this in mind. I think it was more about being yourself, saying what you mean, not trying to creat a sub culture with a strickter dress/acting code than the royal family. But I could be mistaken.

How did they kill punk?

Green Day and Blink 182 are punk/emo? Since when? Pop-punk, yeah, but that in no way has killed punk. Confused legions of unitiated music listeners as to what punk is, yes, but killed punk? No.

What about old school punk? As an OG punk I don't think the new stuff killed punk.

Bands I like:
Sex Pistols
johnny rottens solo stuff
dead kennedys
violent femmes
The clash
ramones

new stuff I like
Blink 182
green day
bowling for soup
a couple of kelly osbornes
the nixons
american hi fi

for those who say bfs is just a cheap knock off of blink or who ever they have been around since about 89 but they were a christian metal band then under the name of the presicuted.

I might be out of the times, but what is an OG punk?

Speaking of punk music, I bought a nice X vinyl today at the local record store. It's oh so cool.

That hits old school perfectly because there is no G in the phrase.

Being an English major just takes the fun out of everything for me.

I thought it was Original Gangster. :(

That is how it began but it is used now as saying either old school or original. Langauge grows and changes, especially slang.

For instance, Ice T calling a model "she is really an OG beauty." on VH1 40 hottest rockstar girlfriends and wives this weekend.

Wow, I never even knew Good Charlotte or Blink was considered punk.

Everywhere I've been and someone put those two with punk people immediatly were all over it with, "That stuff... is not punk." :whoa:

I'm confused.

thelitguy

That's because people have to try and justify their punkness by stating things aren't punk because they have been self-proclaimed the walking punk rock dictionary.

Besides, we all know the only real punk came out of the 1920s movements of dadaism and futurism.

meatfinger
04-08-2005, 05:19 PM
I'd have to agree with that. Duchamp was a hardcore punk.

After reading the Voricist Maninfesto, a movement which followed the same ideas as futurism and dadaism, it seems as if they held the exact same ideas as most punk bands. It's quite interesting.
