hey guys,
i am a worship leader at my church. me and my youth minister have talked about getting congas and having a kid in the youth play them. i am just wondering what advice you could give us in what to buy, and what advice would you give to the kid who is going to play them. she has experience with drums in her school band, i believe, but probably not alot. i am just curious how hard it will be for her to get a basic grasp of the instrument. i appreciate any pointers you guys can give. thanks.

it all depends on how much you wanna spend, but go to http://www.lpmusic.com and go to the product showcase. Sounds like you would want a Madator Series Conga, which are for intermediate players. I wouldn't recommend getting beginner series because you limit growth before she even starts playing. With an intermediate set (or if you are ambitious, the higher end LP models) you not only get a good sound (so the player can't blame it on the instrument :) but you leave room for growth. But this stuff can get pricey.

Jam along with praise music. Most praise music will mix out the hand percussion but it can be inferred with the drums. And practice..and have fun.

the better she is at drums or rhythm in general, the better she will be at percussion. Worship hand percussion isn't hard to "pick up" if one has rhythm or drumming experience already.

I appreciate any pointers you guys can give.

No problem, anything else, just email or IM me.
