yeah, I am pretty exited about my new ipod coming, but I have a question. I konw how if you have songs in you itunes library, it will automaticaly put them on the ipod in the order you have them on your computer library. But I have all of my songs in window media player *dodges tomatoes*, like 2 thousand, so I would like to know if they will automaticaly be placed on the ipod in the genres and stuff I have them, or if I will have to upload them in itunes too. I know ipods tak ewma, but I don't know if it will work for what I have explained...

iPods do NOT support Windows Media files, aka WMA files. Not sure where you heard that, but it's wrong. iPods only support M4A, M4P and MP3 files. The first two are iTunes native files, while MP3 is the standard MP3 file. If your songs are MP3's that you simply play using Media Player for the sake of categorizing and whatnot then you don't have to do anything to get those to work on your iPod. The genre is stored in the same ID3 tag that Media Player reads and has nothing to do with what program you're using to play or categorize the files....again, that's IF you're using MP3 files.
If you are using MP3's you'd still need to load them into iTunes, but you need to make sure your settings in iTunes are set up properly. In the Preferences area click on the Advanced tab. Make sure that "Copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" is UNCHECKED. Otherwise when you drag an MP3 into iTunes it will make a copy of the song in your iTunes music folder, thus doubling the space your music takes up on your hard drive. Also, in the Importing tab I would recommend changing your "Import Using:" setting to MP3 encoder instead of any of the other settings, otherwise it will convert your music to M4A files, which are only playable in iTunes and another very few programs. Using these settings, when you drag music into iTunes it will leave it where it is located on your computer and just load it onto your playlist. All of you genre info should show up fine there IF you are currently using MP3's and NOT WMA files.
I would also recommend disabling the automatic synchronization of your iTunes playlist with your iPod unless you want every single song on your playlist in your iPod. I personally like to rotate the songs in my iPod.

Yes, you just drag the file over to the itunes library. It then says the file needs to be coverted, do you want itunes to conver it. And then just click yes and wait.

yeah. It will give you a little prompt that tells you some files are not supported and need to be converted. Then it will automatically convert those files and place them in your Itunes Folder.

You can't convert protected WMA files. You have to rip them again as MP3.

If you rip with Windows Media Player, I'm thinking that's the default setting. And downloads from Walmart.com are protected WMA... as are Sony CDs with the DRM (Nothing Is Sound, anyone?).

I know there's a setting that can be changed, but I think they're protected by default. :)

nope cause i do it at school, which everything resets to default setting when you use them and i have never changed the settings on my windows media. I just cleared my whole computer and started over, and it let me rip them, then i just converted into itunes later.

I think you read what you wanted to read it as... He didn't say ripping any CD, he said PROTECTED CD's. You can rip those, but not without some fiddling. He also mentioned WMA's downloaded from Wal-Mart.com, which ARE protected by default.
