hands down the iPod. I have the old school generation 3 20gb'er, but I love it and it does me well. I don't dislike anything about it really, I love everything about my ipod. best investment (Well, almost) of my life :)

I have a psp. It plays mp3's. The things I dislike are the size(it's pretty big) and you have to buy flash memory cards for it(very expensive). Ipods are way better.

There's $30 add-ons for that, I'm pretty sure.
I've got an old iPod - first generation 10 gig, I think. It's very quaint. I love it to death though, and when it dies I'll get a nice new fellow. DISCLAIMER: I've been using Apple products since I was six. I'm not a bandwagon hopper! :)

I use an iRiver H320 (couple years old now).
I've never really been an Apple supporter...but I won't get into that discussion since it mostly has to do with the computers side. ;)
Some of these pros and cons may have changed over the years since I researched and bought mine...
Pros:
- Built in features like FM tuner, microphone, direct line-in/line-out.
- I keep my music organized in folders on my computer; not in playlists stored in some program. Therefore, I really don't like being forced to use some software like iTunes if I were to get an iPod. I like to drag file folders of music onto my jukebox as an external drive.
- plays a variety of file formats like wma, ogg, and asf. I think iTunes (and similar Sony software) converts these into their own special format. This defeats the whole purpose of having unique encodings. I think ogg is much better quality for equal bitrate files so why would I want to have it converted to ATRAC3?
- user defined EQ settings.
- colour display was far superior than other players at the time. Now I think iPod colour screens are comparable.
Cons:
- big and bulky. Can't carry it around in my pocket comfortably like those sleek iPod Nano's.
- hard drive. Not as stable as the solid state. Had to make this sacrifice for storage capacity (need my music variety!).
- takes like 30 seconds to boot up when you turn it on.

not to start a mac/PC debate, but their computers have always been their strong point.
and now that these new macs can run both XP and mac os, i'm thrilled, as i had to buy a PC last round, due to software requirements. :sadyep:

Creative MuVo Slim 256mb
For $50, it can do everything your iPod can do except for store an entire record store worth of music and cost you $300 to replace if it breaks.

Then don't compare your mp3 player to a $300 iPod that can do much more than yours can. ;)

I have a begining-of-time memorex that is on its last rope. it has done me well, but its time for it to be replaced. My friend has this samsung thing that does everything an ipod video does, but just doesn't hold as much stuff, but for like $150, that I plan on getting

Playing videos and having more storage is much more? Seriously, how many songs do you listen to in one day? It's not like there's a limit on how often you can change what's on the player. Storage is not really much of an issue. As far as playing videos, call me crazy, but I don't think it's worth $250 more so I can watch video on a 2" screen.

Look, I'm just saying that you can't claim that you have something "very comparable" or "identical" to an iPod Video for $250 less.

I didn't say it was identical. There are, however, only two differences (in favor of the iPod, anyway... mine's got radio, microphone, and better compatibility too): storage and video playback.

But I do wish the iPods had microphones and radio.

and i tend to listen to my ipod for well over 3 hours each day, sometimes more.

what is the battrey like while playing videos on a ipod? i have heard that it is not very long.
Ryan Freeland
05-25-2006, 03:03 PM
That's the problem. It's around 2 hours on full video playback. 12-14 hours music w/o backlight.

as a side note, many ipod users never fully charge their ipods, the ipod is only done the rapid charge process when it signals that charging is complete. it needs to trickle charge for several hours in order to get the advertised battery life.

You can only listen to so many songs in a day. But you can have more songs available to you when you want to listen to them. And there is a limit on how often you change what's on the player- it's how often you're willing to plug in your player and sort out your music.

I don't think this belongs in this forum...
I HAD an Iriver H10 5gb... But it got stolen. I think I'm just gonna get an iPod next or something. The Iriver kept giving me problems.
And there is a limit on how often you change what's on the player- it's how often you're willing to plug in your player and sort out your music.
This is exactly why I'd like a 20 GB mp3 player. I don't want to have to plug it into my computer everytime I want to listen to something different. It's also nice if you want to show your friends a certain band, or you're on a long trip and don't have much room to carry all your CDs, or to listen to a bunch of random songs... Ect. ect. ect.
Keep in mind, having any mp3 player at this moment for me would be nice.

Rio Karma 5GB. Great little thing, amazing battery life (I listened to it for around 8 hours a day in the library over exams and only had to charge it about once a week).
I kind of wish it had more space because it would be nice to just put all my music on it rather than having to decide what I might want to listen to.
God bless, Rich

If you are thinking about getting an ipod video
Stop
And look at the Creative Vision M
http://creative.com/products/product.asp?category=213&subcategory=214&product=14331
It is the same price ($300)
It has more battery life, 14 music 4 video compared to 12 music 2 video
It’s color screen can show 262,144 colors compared to just 65,000
It also comes with Fm radio, radio recording, and voice recording
In my opinion the Specs make the Vision M and hands down pick
