Could someone tell me what in the world an ebow is??
I saw third day's guitarist use it in concert, but I couldn't hear it. Somebody please shed some light on this subject

An ebow is a 9v battery powered magnet that allows you to place it over the strings above the pickup and it in a way magnetizes the string so you don't have to strum. It's also a creative way of playing violin. You can also imitate a horn!

the ebow adds sustain to the guitar. and will almost make the guitar sound like some horns. theyre really cool i play around with them every once in awhile, so i would buy one. they are really cool.  :D :)

Is that an ebow in the bridge of "My Hope Is In You?"

Actually, you can also get a Sustainiac, which is like a built in ebow for your guitar. Very cool!!

Build one? No, but that would be an interesting project. I bet you could probably crack one open (gently!) and see how it worked.
I would just recommend the Sustainiac. You can still use an ebow with it if you wanted, but it would give you lots of versatility.
Perfect for creating reliable feedback. Don't you just hate it when you hear those absolutely delicisious bits of feedback in your favorite solo, but for the life of you, you just can't reproduce it?

My delay pedal has a very Ebowish volume swell, so I probably won't buy one, but they are quite neat.

Well, yes and no. Ebows and Sustainiacs work by magnetically driving the strings. Pedals manipulate the signal after the fact. So you will never get a true sustaining effect from a pedal.
That said, if you delay pedal gives you all the sustain effect you want, cool!

Yeah, the sustain is the only difference. However, the sustain is sort of simulated as well, since there is a delay on it, you can get swells on the delaying part, so it can pretty accurately emulate an Ebow, I'd say.
First, check out this thread (http://www.christianguitar.org/forums/showthread.php?t=51175) and this thread (http://www.christianguitar.org/forums/showthread.php?t=42896). There's some pretty extensive ebow information there, and they'll probably answer most of your questions.
If you want to hear what an ebow sounds like, this clip demonstrates how I like to use it.

Granted.
However, do go out and check out a Sustainiac when you get a chance!! It's awesome! A surreal experience to be sure.

Yep, they sound interesting. How about a sustainac system, being played with an Ebow, through a volume swell with delay?

Yes, it is. I LIKE IT!!!!!!
The only problem would be whether the Sus and the Ebow cancel each other out. But, if you could get it to work, that would be totally trippin'. BTW, you could also run all that thru a Ring Modulator.

Does anyone want to add compression and quite a bit of distortion to that mix? Eternal sustain...

Eternal sustain?
Just leave the sustainer on indefintely!! It will sustain forever, or until the battery runs down. :o

Well, it would still be pretty sick to add some compression and distortion to the mix...
