relient K, Sparechange00, Branston

I brought along Nick and JefftheRed (from school) for this show. It was Nick's 5th rK show, my 11th or so (12 if you count MTTE), and Red's first concert. We met up w/ John and Andy (both from YouthQuest), Matt and Deveraux (My best friends from church), Hannah, Rachel and Brittany, Kyle and Ryan, and all these other kids Matt, Dev, and Hannah brought along. PHEW.

Anyway we had a lot of fun outside the Canton Palace Theatre (a smaller version of Akron's Civic Theatre-complete w/ starry ceiling) before the show. We really didnt know what to expect tonight- was there gonna be a pit? were we gonna have to sit down? will these white ticket vouchers hold true? just how many people will be attending this concert? will it start 2 hours late like all other Basement Concert productions? will the Malone College security act like a bunch of butt holes like usual?

Most of those questions were answered yes. We walk in and there is zero place in front of the stage to mosh. About 10 rows were already taken up so we decided to see if the balcony was open. It was and we were the first group up there. We took up one whole section- they were awesome seats front row of balcony.

At this point you don't even know how ticked I was. I mean I go to the shows to mosh. What the crap.... I was ticked. Not to mention, all those crappy Malone security were being power hungry. No throwing paper airplanes over the balcony. No sitting in the aisles. "Find a seat, Find a seat, Find a seat".

So these Branson guys come on. The one guitarist that didn't sing made a fool of himself. The first song wasn't bad. Too bad every song after sounded exactly the same. I don't know if Brantson can't sing, or if it was just the 26 40 year old speakers, but nobody couldn't understand what they were saying. About the 3rd song I took a nap.

Sparechange came out next. They weren't that bad, but we had a lot of fun up in the balcony. We picked up all these hot chicks and we were having some good fun up in the balcony when they came up. Crazy kids. These girls kept on hitting on me and I didn't know what to do cause I have a novia. Oh well.

Sparechange played a set almost bigger than rK.

Now, it was time for relient K (ABOUT TIME).

Brian had his Ernie Ball Sterling, Matt H his black on black Tele, and Matt T his Gibson Thunderbird. Matt H has a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier half stack (I'm jealous), Matt T has a Orange head and Marshall half stack, and Brian has a huge Ampeg bass cabinet a la Mike Herrera and an unknown bass head (looks custom made or something).

For the life of me I can't remember their opening number, but they played such favorites as Charles in Charge, Skittles and Combos, a cover, Sadie Hawkins, Pressing On, May the Horse, Maybe It's Mabeline, Down in Flames, For the Moments I Feel Faint, Softer to Me, Staples, Wake-Up Call, My Girlfriend, and they ended it off w/ Hello McFly.

During Wake-Up Call Matt T had something wrong w/ his Firebird. I think a string broke. He went and got his Gibson Les Paul (not sure on which kind, I am not into Les Pauls). Then his strap didnt go on this guitar so he went back and got Matt H's extra strap. This took a good 5 minutes but it was cool. Matt H, Brian, and Dave just played like the ending Wake Up Call for 5 minutes.

Since we are rebels, we decided on rK's last song we were gonna go down in front and mosh. If they kicked us out, oh well it was the last song. So when Matt said it was the last one, we ran down the stairs and into the aisles. We had a mosh pit right in the aisle. After the show Nick only had to say "Geesh, I got butt-raped by 10 different arms of the chairs."

relient K recorded this performance! I think they said it was for their live album, but I didn't really hear cause Dev was yelling in my ear. Anyway, if the live album comes out, listen for "BACKSTREET BOYS!!!" being yelled really loud- that was us.

The show was really weird cause their wasn't a mosh pit. It kinda felt like I was listening to an album in my room in my CD player. I didn't feel that conection w/ the band like you would when you are close to them in the pit. I have to hand it to rK though. One year to the day, they played at a skating rink in Jackson. Now, they are headlining Canton Palace Theatre. I would take the skating rink over the Theatre anyday-but it just goes to show how far they got.

I felt like I was at a Creed or Aerosmith concert w/ all the standing going on.

I forgot to say. After the show everyone stood around and yelled and stuff. Matt T came back out and wrote a song on the spot about Thanksgiving and Turkey. It was better than Adam Sandler's song. "Turkeys, they eat turkeys.... 'cuz turkeys are too good to pass up"

i saw that concert too...IT ROCKED!!! i went up to mosh during the last song...all the security people came up and told us to sit down...what a bummer! so me and my friends moshed in our row. i got knocked down a few times and i fell on the floor. i was standing right beside the speakers so i couldnt hear hardly anything when it was over. it was awesome though. the thanksgiving song was awesome! i saw some guy w/ a plunger on his head...wonder if it was used??? lol mostly everyone had spikes and studs. you didnt really fit in if you didnt. i saw relient k's concert last year at some roller skating place on thanksgiving's eve. it was better. cause u actually were allowed to mosh and EVERYONE had to stand cause there wasnt any seats!! ACE TROUBLESHOOTER was there! so...overall the concert was awesome!

yeah i saw the plunger dude, he was cool, i was kinda ticked about how many a&f kids there were there...the show wasnt punk-rawk at all...i love the band n all, but it jus didnt have the punk-rawk feel, i dont know if it might have been the fire marshall saying that no one else was allowed in, or that there seemed to be more preps than punks, or that there were seats...someone tell me if they had this feeling at all?i talked to brian before the show, he said he felt really bad that all these people couldnt get in who had voutures...i think it was about when the first band started that i talked to him...not sure, it was outside, but we felt the vibrations...i dont know if i'll ever go to a show at the palace again...they should play at the civic center...it would be a lot better...you can have a giant pit plus there are seats for the preps who dont mosh, you could fit like 8000 in there, if not more...well im done with my complaining, i liked the show, rK was too short tho it seemed...i wish they would have played the whole "FTMIFF", or at least taken it into curb, me n micah were talking bout that, whoever did the sound tho, for the vocals...they didnt have the lead vocals up enough...siiiigh, not the best show i've been to by rK :( but it was alright, hopefully they will play again soon, crap this turned to a long post...

I was there too!!!!!!
You guys were the "Backstreet Boys!" guys?? mystery solved..
I was in the middle section, 6th rowish....that was awesome. We got there at 5:30 to buy tickets and stand for a place. Even though we weren't allowed to go up front and jump around, my friends and I did it all in the row.
The opening song was Charles in Charge...I wish they'd done Failure to Excommunicate....that's my fave. It was all good though, cuz they did "For the Moments I Feel Faint".
I was so psyched that it was recorded...homecomings rule!

hey i was there too.....actually, I stood right behind you! (I think...if you were with John, then yeah i was right behind you..) During rK, me and some of my friends went over on the left stairs and danced and moshed around. I couldn't really hear the vocals very well, but it was still fun. I'm sure it would've sounded 10x better if we were down on the ground level. It really didn't seem like a real relient k show, with all the screaming preps everywhere, and the fact we had to stay in rows and seats. (the reason for that is because 3 years ago, i went to see fif and switchfoot and the smiley kids and rk, and there WAS a mosh pit, but something got broke, so the Palace said never again...according to Pittman, that is..) BLEH.. but it was also a different but good experience. I got a whole different view of rk playing..you can really see the talent they have from up above. Well anyways, I also enjoyed the fox entertainment center show MUCH better, but I'll take what i can get for free. my voucher didn't work either...i would've been stuck outside, but my youth counselor had an extra ticket. PHEW... oh and also...I personally happened to like Brandtson a lot...felt bad that people were sitting down. I went down to the bottom level so I could hear them better and it was a big difference than from up in the balcony. Maybe I'm just a big emo lover though. I was sad I didn't get to talk to Matt T or the rest of the band, but i never saw 'em anywhere. ah well.. aaanyways, i guess i'll stop now. feel free to visit my rk fanclub site.. http://go.to/relientk ..Post on my message board, you'll make me happy. see ya.

I'm not trying to be rude...just curious...but do you think all Relient K, mxpx, etc. songs sound the same? Because they do to me more so than Brandtson songs do. Besides, Brandtson was just thinking of the kids that night...trying to play faster, poppier songs in consideration of the audience. They played an excellent set. I can't believe you fell asleep...you were really missing out. You make me sad. :)

Yeah..I thought Brantson was very good. The leader that went with our Young Life group bought the CD and when we put it in, I had no idea it was Brantson..they really sped up their songs for the concert. They were very good singers. Espcially the drummer..better than Sparechange, I thought. But everyone has their own opinion.
This was just mine.

i dont get the point of why a band would change their songs to please people in one show?o well, they're perogative(sp?). sparechange00 is actually really good, they are more of a band that plays to like 200 people at a time, they are so awesome if you ever get to go to an intimite show like that that they are playing, hes a great singer, but i guess its really hard to make a judgement seeing have the time you couldnt hear vocals for any band...or you could but couldnt understand them...o well, im out..

Yeah...Jared (the drummer) has an excellent voice. I think my favorite thing about Brandtson is their vocals. It's great how Jared and Myk sing dueling parts. They also harmonize really well. I like their "smaller" shows much better though. If you liked them, you should really go to one of their club shows sometime...they play to 100 kids or so, and they're the nicest guys ever. you should introduce yourself after a show...they don't bite, and they're always hanging around their merch table.

They didn't change their songs; they just opted to play their faster, poppier ones. They didn't want the kids to get bored. MOST (not all) of the people who are into "emo" are older. It's just not something a lot of kids are into.

Besides, MANY bands (including Brandtson sometimes) play their songs faster live than they do on disc. They do this at club shows as well as at larger shows like the Relient K show.

well, the way i interpreted what was said bout speeding up the songs and the wording of it, made it sound like they jus changed it for that show and no other show, and i think you'd be surprised how many kids like emo, well, depending on if you are talking about true emo(emo-core) or what people consider emo now(like the getupkids and furtherSeemsForever). wow ive been reading over my posts, i dont mean to sound controversial with them, thats what i think it could be mistaken for, sorry all.

Although I'm a fan of Brandtson and Sparechange00, I could see where the Relient K crowd wouldn't be into the opening bands that much. It's just not their thing. Nothing against the bands, but I thought they were a bad choice for the overall feel of that show.

The vouchers were a big problem that night. Most people thought the voucher was the ticket for the show. The voucher had to be traded in for a ticket by mailing it in or bringing it to a place where the tickets were being sold.
