relient K, Sparechange00, Branston
I brought along Nick and JefftheRed (from school) for this show. It was Nick's 5th rK show, my 11th or so (12 if you count MTTE), and Red's first concert. We met up w/ John and Andy (both from YouthQuest), Matt and Deveraux (My best friends from church), Hannah, Rachel and Brittany, Kyle and Ryan, and all these other kids Matt, Dev, and Hannah brought along. PHEW.
Anyway we had a lot of fun outside the Canton Palace Theatre (a smaller version of Akron's Civic Theatre-complete w/ starry ceiling) before the show. We really didnt know what to expect tonight- was there gonna be a pit? were we gonna have to sit down? will these white ticket vouchers hold true? just how many people will be attending this concert? will it start 2 hours late like all other Basement Concert productions? will the Malone College security act like a bunch of butt holes like usual?
Most of those questions were answered yes. We walk in and there is zero place in front of the stage to mosh. About 10 rows were already taken up so we decided to see if the balcony was open. It was and we were the first group up there. We took up one whole section- they were awesome seats front row of balcony.
At this point you don't even know how ticked I was. I mean I go to the shows to mosh. What the crap.... I was ticked. Not to mention, all those crappy Malone security were being power hungry. No throwing paper airplanes over the balcony. No sitting in the aisles. "Find a seat, Find a seat, Find a seat".
So these Branson guys come on. The one guitarist that didn't sing made a fool of himself. The first song wasn't bad. Too bad every song after sounded exactly the same. I don't know if Brantson can't sing, or if it was just the 26 40 year old speakers, but nobody couldn't understand what they were saying. About the 3rd song I took a nap.
Sparechange came out next. They weren't that bad, but we had a lot of fun up in the balcony. We picked up all these hot chicks and we were having some good fun up in the balcony when they came up. Crazy kids. These girls kept on hitting on me and I didn't know what to do cause I have a novia. Oh well.
Sparechange played a set almost bigger than rK.
Now, it was time for relient K (ABOUT TIME).
Brian had his Ernie Ball Sterling, Matt H his black on black Tele, and Matt T his Gibson Thunderbird. Matt H has a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier half stack (I'm jealous), Matt T has a Orange head and Marshall half stack, and Brian has a huge Ampeg bass cabinet a la Mike Herrera and an unknown bass head (looks custom made or something).
For the life of me I can't remember their opening number, but they played such favorites as Charles in Charge, Skittles and Combos, a cover, Sadie Hawkins, Pressing On, May the Horse, Maybe It's Mabeline, Down in Flames, For the Moments I Feel Faint, Softer to Me, Staples, Wake-Up Call, My Girlfriend, and they ended it off w/ Hello McFly.
During Wake-Up Call Matt T had something wrong w/ his Firebird. I think a string broke. He went and got his Gibson Les Paul (not sure on which kind, I am not into Les Pauls). Then his strap didnt go on this guitar so he went back and got Matt H's extra strap. This took a good 5 minutes but it was cool. Matt H, Brian, and Dave just played like the ending Wake Up Call for 5 minutes.
Since we are rebels, we decided on rK's last song we were gonna go down in front and mosh. If they kicked us out, oh well it was the last song. So when Matt said it was the last one, we ran down the stairs and into the aisles. We had a mosh pit right in the aisle. After the show Nick only had to say "Geesh, I got butt-raped by 10 different arms of the chairs."
relient K recorded this performance! I think they said it was for their live album, but I didn't really hear cause Dev was yelling in my ear. Anyway, if the live album comes out, listen for "BACKSTREET BOYS!!!" being yelled really loud- that was us.
The show was really weird cause their wasn't a mosh pit. It kinda felt like I was listening to an album in my room in my CD player. I didn't feel that conection w/ the band like you would when you are close to them in the pit. I have to hand it to rK though. One year to the day, they played at a skating rink in Jackson. Now, they are headlining Canton Palace Theatre. I would take the skating rink over the Theatre anyday-but it just goes to show how far they got.
I felt like I was at a Creed or Aerosmith concert w/ all the standing going on.
