I noticed while reading the 'playing ska' lesson that they have an 'awkward' way to play it listed. The way i play the jab chords and rythem clicks is by muting with my right hand just before I hit the strings on the downstroke then play a 'normal' up stroke on the first 3 strings. I found it to be much easier especially if you are going for speed.

I'm not sure where the "lesson" you're talking about is, but the way you described it is just about exactly how I play ska...
I have seen others, though, that will mute with the left hand more (where as you and I prefer to use the right palm) and use some up and some down strums.

Good luck!

Occasional downstrokes and lots of quick upstrokes with palm muting. I generally like playing the downward strum on the upbeat of the measure. It gives you a paw, pickapicka, paw, picka picka kinda sound...that probably just lost people.
