5, sometimes 4, it depends on the type of bass.

Switched from 4 to 5 strings about a year ago. It toke me awhile to get use to it, but I've really fallen in love with low "B". You feel it more than hear it!

It's been so long since I played a 4 string, I don't think I could.

Groover, do you have any trouble switching between the two?

You left out a few numbers...

1 (I've played a washtub bass, it had only one string.)
2 (Some punk rock bass player kid I read about in Bass Player only put two strings on his bass.)
3 (Tony Levin was featured in Bass Player a few years ago, he had a custom 3 string bass.)
9 (You'll find a nine string bass in the weird bass section of www.bunnybass.com)
10 (Like an eight string only with low Bs.)
11 (Never saw or heard of one but I'm sure there's gotta be one out there somewhere.)

Peace!

Not any more. When I first started getting used to a five string I would mess myself up when changing to a 4. I overcome that hurtle after a little while of just purposely switching back and forth. It just takes a little time. To most gigs outside of Church I now carry a fretted 5 and a fretless 4. I can switch back and forth with no problem. I also feel right at home on a six string even though I don't own one.

Peace!

Unfortunately, that was destroyed in fire with a bunch of other instuments :( (http://www.tonylevin.com/pbfire.htm)

9 (You'll find a nine string bass in the weird bass section of www.bunnybass.com)

Bill Dickens also plays a 9 string (http://www.billthebuddhadickens.com)

10 (Like an eight string only with low Bs.)

John Paul Jones also has a version with a high C

There also two different types of 12 string, 4 string with 3 courses, and 6 string with 2 courses.

Bill Dickens! Thats it! I couldn't think of his name at the time and that's why I didn't mention him.

Man that's must be rough having custom and vintage instruments destroyed in a fire like that. I'm sorry to hear about Tony's loss. I'm sure he's got a few new toys in the past few years to make up for it.

peace!

I've only played on a 4 string. I love my bass, but I wish I had a high C string. I probably would want a 6 string.

Sheesh...nothing to say. Just had to change the number of posts in the forum to 667 since Little Man posted the oh-so-evil number... :p
