Hands down.... No question..... Go out and buy either of the two CD's by Lincoln Brewster, and give a listen......
He is so talented as a guitarist...Not only, but also, at many other instruments.......His demo he used when he was signed by Integrity Music was done will overlays of him playing every instrument on it, and singing all the harmony.....What a talent......
I think his best work, however belongs to the CD "Freedom" by Darrell Evans.... Both guys being signed with Vertical Music, Lincoln and Darrell got to make this project SWEET !!!!!!!
Check out the song "I am in love with you"..... The last four or five minutes is just Spontaneous worship, and it is awesome what Lincoln does on the guitar......
Hands down, Lincoln Brewster...
Signed,
Mr Green......23

I noticed no one mentioned one of the top five if not the best guitarist out there...Phil Keaggy. He would wipe the map with any one of the people mentioned so far.

Yeah I forgot to mention Phil Keaggy in my first list of guitar players, sorry. I went to my room and looked at my CDs when I had finished posting that message and I realized, I forgot him.
Oh yeah, this really cool guy, Nathan Green from Drop An Olive, what a great guitar player!

Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds are both very good.
I also like Bebo Norman and Derek Webb.
No one has mentioned Don Chaffer from Waterdeep yet. If you've only listened to their latest works, you haven't really delved into the skills of Don Chaffer. Listen to Live at the New Earth and then try to find To Chase Away the Birds. He's got phenomenal electric guitar skills!

I think Stevie is the best. I also like to hear Glenn Campbell. I know he is not known as a great guitar player but he is. He played as a studio musician for a long time before he cut his own album. He also was a "Beach Boy" for a while. Try to get past the songs that he sings and listen to him play. I think you will be in awe.

Brett Detar, Joshua Kosker, Jeriah Momper from The Juliana Theory
Jason Martin from Starflyer 59
Bud Carrol (He plays in an emo band called 'Transistor Indiana')
Aaron Sprinkle from Poor Old Lu (And his solo stuff)
Now that's some guitarists....

Dang, I'm supposed to follow that? Anyways . . .
I have to say that Steven Curtis Chapman is one of the most overlooked guitarists in the world. I think he's been mentioned like, twice on this list so far, but anyways -- his stuff is really difficult to play -- if you don't believe me, go out and buy one of his folios and then try to play it. Then, the stuff of his that I can play just doesn't come out sounding the same way that he does. Also, I like Clapton and then Phil Keaggy is one of the most talented guitarists ever as well. Also, I have to mention matt Odmark and Stephen Mason as really awesome guitarists, too. (for those that don't know -- they're the Jars of Clay dudes that play guitar.) That's my short list, I suppose -- I could sit all day and talk about talented guitarists, but I'm sure y'all want to get on to reading other threads, so I'll cut it short here. :D
In Him,
+ <>< Stephen

uhh, whoever recognized phil keaggy as the best is exactly right. he is hands down the best guitarist in the world. in the 60's i think rolling stone asked jimi hendrix how it felt to be the best guitarist in the world and he was like "i dunno, why don't you ask phil keaggy"? i saw phil keaggy at a guitar clinic near me (cary, N.C.) and he absolutely amazing-unreal. never did he once play a simple chord like G or E. never. he played chords he had made up and were almost impossible looking. on his right hand, he's missing a middle finger! now that's incredible. God truly has given him more than a talent! if you haven't heard phil keaggy and you still think van halen, santana, all those secular guys and also those great guitarists like matt odbark who won an award for guitarist of the year (for secular and christian) along with the guy from switchfoot, check out phil. you will definately change your mind!

#1 Phil Keaggy
#2 Stevie Ray Vaughn
#3 Joe Walsh
I forgot about Eric Johnson
switchfoot974
06-16-2001, 11:44 PM
By far Stevie Ray Vaughan, no one will ever be close to the power he captured through his instrument. He used it as his voice. It is so amazing to watch him play on TV, it was a sad day when he died. Second is a tie between Eric Johnson and Phil Keaggy, both are equally amazing....
Eric
I'm with MRGREEN, Lincoln Brewster is a top notch guitarist! Here are my other favorite guitarists for one reason or another:
> Dwayne Larring (formerly) of Sonicflood
> Stu G. of Delirious
> Tyler Burkum of Audio Adrenaline
> whoever played guitar for DC Talk on Jesus Freak and Welcome to the Freak Show
> Scott Kerr (formerly) of Five Iron Frenzy
> Jennifer Knapp
> whoever plays guitar for Luna Halo
> Bronson (formerly) of the OC Supertones
> David Crowder
I notice that there are a lot of secular guitarists mentioned, and I don't blame you all, cuz there are a lot of guitarists that don't use their talents to glorify God that are just plain good. Anyway these are ones that I happen to think are really good cuz I used to listen to them:
> Pete Townsend of the Who
> Carlos Santana
> Terry Kath (formerly) of Chicago
> Stevie Ray Vaughn
> Jimi Hendrix
> Eric Clapton [props to RockinRonnie for knowin' Cream!]
> Jeff Beck
> Jimmy Page of Led Zepplin
> Steve Howe of Yes
> Duane Allman of the Allman Brothers Band
Anyway, that's my two cents!

If we're going with who we think has the best talent, I'd have to go with Stevie Ray Vaughn. If it's who's style you like the best it's a tie between the Third Day guys and the combo of Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds.
Others (for both talent and style):
Jimi Hendrix
Al Anderson (lead guitarist, not rhythm, for Bob Marley from 74-80, check out the live version of 'Heathen')
Peter Tosh
Eric Clapton
Robert Johnson
Ben Harper (particularly on the Weissenborn lap-slide)
James Taylor
Jimmy Page
Ed Cash
Jennifer Knapp
Bebo Norman

I think I forgot to add a few of my personal favorites:
Lindsay Buckingham (I think that's his name) from Fleetwood Mac
Tom Morello from Rage Against the Machine
Whoever played guitar for Jim Croce was pretty clever too.
and I'll agree, Steven Curtis Chapman is definitely an underrated guitar player. He also is a great singer and songwriter.

And furthermore, I think that the best as far as talent goes, is Phil Keaggy. I mean, you can kinda compare him to other guitarists for a while, but there really isn't anyone who has the same range of genres as Phil. Obviously, Vaughn and Clapton and even Beck are masters in the realm of blues, and have a slight step up on Phil. However, Phil has done a crap load of stuff. I mean, he's hit Jazz and folk pretty heavily, along with a good lot of world music. He messes around quite nicely with more alternate tunings than you can shake a stick at. He's got more tapping and glisses and picking styles than any other guitarist I've seen. He's recently tackled Classical and pulled off an excellent album. And he's always had blues based rock songs and pop songs.
Now, maybe that isn't talent, but I find it most impressive. I reckon if he focused on one aspect or another, he'd just plane soar above most everybody. It is too bad about Stevie. That guy had a lot of skill. And he could have done more with it had he not passed on. Same goes for Hendrix.
nestamanchris
06-18-2001, 11:41 PM
Good point, RockinRonnie. I haven't heard much of Keaggy's stuff, but what I have heard is amazing. I read an article on his website (www.philkeaggy.com) not too long ago where he said he uses over 15 different tunings, so many he has trouble remembering them.
I'd also have to add Tom Morello (he's unbelievably innovative).

Jen Knapp!! Hehe..okay, so she probably doesnt compare to all those amazing guitar players you all named so far, but she is good.... not just "she's good for a girl" either... She definitely can play. The electric guitarist in her band is seriously CRAZY too! I don't even know his name, but my friend and I went to watch Jen, and half the time we were just in awe of what her electric guitarist was doing. Phil Keaggy is really good too..I agree w/ a lot of you guys. And have any of you guys heard of Dennis Agajanian???!!?? Even though I don't like his style or his songs (mostly bluegrass/country type stuff) his guitar playing is crazy! He is seriously like the world's fastest flatpicker or something...it's insane. I just saw him yesterday at Harvest Crusade in Anaheim....and oh my...his fingers seriously fly! I don't think it's humanly possible to pick so fast. Ok..enough. Some others I like... I really like SCC, Bebo Norman, Dave Matthews a lot, Eric Clapton (!)... ummm... oh yeah! How could I forget Jewel!!! Ahhh..there's too many to name. You guys have said a lot of them already too..so I'll stop there.
