Hey guys. This forum was created to jumpstart CGR's PowerTab section. It can be used to:
Ask questions about PowerTab Editor
Get suggestions for your PowerTab file before you release it
Request a particular song to be put into PowerTab
Ask for help on getting a very accurate PowerTab file (ie - How does this section go?)
All the information you need to get started is here (http://www.christianguitar.org/powertab/), so get after it! Thanks for your help in building CGR's PowerTab section!

What exactly is PowerTab? I suppose I'm not up to date on it so I need to be enlightened...

It's a FREE program that let's you write music according to tab and puts it into music notation as well. Click here (http://powertab.guitarnetwork.org/images/produc1.gif) for a screenshot. It's great for writing down riffs you make up for guitar or for figuring out how a song goes (our primary purpose here). Check out their website (http://www.power-tab.net).

I've been looking for something like this for a long time. I'm in the process of downloading the software now. I'll post again later after I play with it for awhile.

Tab is the easiest way to share guitar music on the internet. It's also a good way to relate to people who can't read music (although they should eventually learn).

I've seen that program before. It's not nearly as vesatile as PowerTab. Just about anything that can be done on guitar can be done with PowerTab, and I think it's a much higher quality program for your money (free, rather than $20).

Hmm...I'm making this a sticky since it basically tells what the forum's for and about the program. Don't really need stickies in here yet since there aren't many threads, but this place could just take off one day, and where would the post be? Lost. So...sticky.

TabIt is much easier to use PowerTab. These Programs use your computers MIDI to playback sounds. Every Computer has a soundcard on it that has at least 128 instruments with a sample of every note on it. There are Drum tracks, Guitar tracks, Bass, Brass instruments, etc... You can Download a trial version of TabIt at www.tabit.net

TabIt is not freeware like PowerTab, plus it can't do as much. Any problems you have with PowerTab will probably be fixed in the new version coming out soon. Here's a list (http://powertab.guitarnetwork.org/preview.htm) of things that will be changed.

bah, I still prefer TabIt, the only drawback is all of the message boards members are die-hard athiests that won't listen to anything. There are even a few agnostic members :( . However, most of them are mature enough to respect that I'm a Christian.

Tab-It is definately alot easier to use than PowerTab, but it still sucks. Every song I play is in either Drop D tuning or Drop C,(CGCFAd) and you can't even change the tuning in TabIt. Not to mention you can add effects to the guitars in PowerTab. (i.e. distortion guitar, overdriven guitar, clean guitar... etc) Sorry Mudvayne. My vote goes for powerTab. (Although I haven't figured out how to use it yet).

I played around with the TabIt demo for a while, and I've changed my mind. I discovered that you can change the tuning and midi sound for each guitar. Not to mention that TabIt can do drums as well. It still sucks that you have to shell out 20 bucks for the lousy thing, but it is alot easier to use than PowerTab.

The next PowerTab release will allow drums to be used, plus a bunch of other things. Check my previous posts to find the PowerTab site. There's a link on the front page that list the new features. Sorry, I don't know when it will be released.

That's definately good, but that doesn't change the fact that it's the most un-user-friendly thing I've ever seen. It's nice to be able to DL my fav songs in PT so I can hear how they go, but as for tabbing my own... maybe I can find some junior college courses on it...

BTW, does anyone know where I could find some PowerTab guitar lessons? Also, is there a tutorial video available for the PowerTab editor software?

I don't uderstand what's so hard about it. The only thing I had trouble figuring out was how to do rhythm slashes. If you have any specific questions, I'll be happy to answer them for you, but I would ask that you start a new thread for each question/group of questions.

lol. It'd probably be easier to list the things I'm not having problems with.
btw, do you have to be sheet music legible to be able to make a PowerTab? I know absolutely nothing about sheet music. (Except for the fact that all cows eat grass.)

You need to know how to read rhythms, but other than that, no.
Danny

You mean like, whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, etc?
I don't know that stuff fluently, but it'll be easy enough to learn, I'm sure.

Here's a quick tip:
If you're not sure exactly where to put the measure bar lines, but you want or need them in the music, highlight everything, cut it (shift+x or or just hit the cut button) and then paste it back (shift+v). The bar lines will all be placed correctly. If you want to take them out, you need to move the keyboard cursor over the bar line and hit the measure button (it's just a vertical line). Hope that helps.

I noticed both of these programs are for Windows, and I have an Imac. Is there an equivalent program for the mac available?

Unfortunately, no. Although, if you'd like, you can ask the tabber to export the ptab to text and midi and post it. That's the only consolation I can give you.

Wow, I'd never heard of TabIt until just awhile ago.
I DLed it and gave it a shot. I gotta say, it's terrible. No rhythm notation of any kind? So how is someone using a printed page from TabIt supposed to know how the tune sounds rhythmically? Reading rhythm is the absolute easiest part of reading music. Anyone can learn to read basic rhythm in mere minutes- literally. Tab without rhythm is almost useless.
Another thing- how can one import a midi file into TabIt so that the program converts it to tab for you? I didn't see this function anywhere, maybe I just missed it. With Powertab, you just import a midi file and there's the tab.
Powertab really isn't difficult to use, y'know.
Excellence for free or mediocrity for $20. Hmmm, tough choice.

Download a MIDI file. Go into PowerTab editor. File -> Import -> MIDI File.
To attach a powerTab, click on "Manage Attachments" while posting.

Ok, I've had this program on my computer for almost a year now, and I've never used it, because everytime I start it up, all the buttons freak me out, and I don't know where to start. That, and I have no idea at all, what I"m doing. I'd really like some/alot of help. I really wanna be able to tab out songs for my learning pleasure, and this program is the key, but I don't know what I"m doing, and I"m no good at fooling around until I figure out how to do it...I need a tutorial, or the guy who started this thread to love me enough to help me, lol.

In terms of learning songs, what's the difference between using Powertabs and simply reviewing posts/submissions in text formats in the archive?
I have yet to really use it because I don't know if it's worth the download and comp. disk space. It seems that powertabs is good for writing but I'm not that good a listening to a record and playing what I hear.
Any thoughts?
Thanks!

So do you post powertabs here or do you submit them to Mickey?
Are there only a handful of powertabs on the main site while the rest and most of them are in this forum?
