For a typical band setup what effects would you suggest having for an electric guitar
I know distortion and Chorus but what else should I consider buying

You can get a delay/echo pedal. A decent one of these can be a great addition to your setup.

Flanger definitely. It is similar to a chorus in the way it functions, I actually use both in worship.
A very nice addition
Delay is good too.

delay's are great effects... if there's one guitar you can use it on a low volume to fill in the sound a little bit... wahs are great too... maybe a tremolo..... anyways.. distortion and delay are probly the first i would get... then a chorus, and maybe a wah if that's your thing... then look into some other modulation effects(tremolo, phaser, flanger, etc.)

What brands/types are you thinking about getting? A flange and Phase are nice. I think though that a Chorus, Distortion or Overdrive and Digital Dealy. I think if you want to add a third one to your list get a Boss Digital Delay. There good and relatively cheap compared to the other alternatives.
