hey peoples- i need your input. do you like newsboys old school stuff or the last 2 albums better? i think they should go back to the better writing like the albums "take me to your leader" and "love liberty disco". it was funner to listen to and more original, in my opinion. what do you guys think?

I'll move this to the Newsboys forum.

As for me, they hit their peak with Take Me To Your Leader. They were never the same once John James left. Going Public and Take Me To Your Leader are both fantastic albums. The sans-James follow-up, Step Up to the Microphone was decent, and had some good songs and I think I'm one of the few people that actually liked Love, Liberty, Disco, but they weren't up to the quality of their eariler work (not their earliest work, which was awful).

Thrive was a very average album, but at least they had Steven Taylor back writing songs for them. Their two worship albums were a huge disappointment. Exactly what we don't need: more crummy worship albums...

But the fact is, they're never going to be as good as they were circa Take Me To Your Leader. They don't have John James anymore.

yeah, i have to agree with you- they're first few albums sucked, take me to your leader was my favorite, and with adoration and devotions they are starting to get to mellow for me.

that's true. I think post Take Me To Your Leader, the creativity and authenticity of their music has gone away.

I liked Cornelius from thrive, and Joy is an awesome song, otherwise i have to agree with skeeter... except, john james was good, but he wasn't the only reason for thier success... i think they just have produced so much, and were doing it so fast for a while that they lost the inspiration... they need to sit back for a while and revive their old selves..

dude, there should not even be discussion. their older stuff is by far the best stuff they have created. I like step up to the microphone a lot, but definitely take me to your leader and earlier are their best. i don't see how anyone could argue.

Yeah "Hell is for Wimps" is awsome. They totally sold out after that!!! ...I mean

I was actually thinking about this the other day. In the mid/late 90s the Newsboys were making some really cool pop-rock. It was musically interesting and lyrically clever. They were distinct with their music and lyrics. As others have said "Take Me to Your Leader" seemed to be the peak of their career. I didn't like "Step Up to the Microphone" when it first came out, but in the couple of years I've really started to appreciate it. ....then we get "Love Liberty Disco." :cry: "Thrive" didn't interest me at all. "Adoration" was a very generic album that lacked any distinction, but at least it was decent at making a generic pop/rock worship album. I don't think devotion is even decent at what it does. I don't like any of it.

I think they're older stuff is better but not they're really older stuff

I do like some of their pop/rock/worship. though but
Step Up to the Microphone and
Take me to your leader are probably their better albums
They both rock!

Yeah...what Sean said except that remark about Love, Liberty, Disco. From what I have heard of it (I vaguely remeber what I heard from what I got of it off of Kazaa many many years ago in my e-pirating dayz), I enjoyed it. Of course, I was also busy downloading songs from Toby Mac and P.O.D. at the time...

I've been subjected to a lot of the Adoration stuff in the car. Musically, it's not the worst thing one could be forced to listen to, but....it's just so average praise and worship stuff. Blah.

They're coming out with a new two-disc rock album/worship album thing this fall, I believe. This will be the first rock album featuring the new guitarist. They're combining it with a worship album...why?

The Newsboys have dropped of the map for me. After their original lead singer left it all went downhill in my opinion. Nice guys, but better with pete on the kit, and John up front. I really liked the old school stuff. I''m dating myself here, but the first time I saw them was in 1990. They were opening For Petra. That was a good show.

Let's see. I haven't heard very much from the latest stuff (Just Amazing Love and He Reigns both of which I liked. As well as whatever else they did at aquire the fire this past spring.)

I have Take me to your Leader. And bits and pieces of other stuf they've done around that time (Shine, Entertaining Angels, Love Liberty Disco).

I guess by default I enjoy their older stuff more.

I saw them in 2002 (I think) and they Co-Headlined with Petra. It was an awesome show. I got to meet both bands.

I'm gonna have to go with the old school stuff too. The newer is just very generic.

I liked SUTTM better than TMTYL... to me John's voice was too nasally... but I do agree they need to get out of the worship scene and go back... including getting rid of Steve Taylor. I know he's helped write a lot of lyrics, but I love Peter/Phil's lyrics on SUTTM, they're much more creative and heartfelt. Adoration was okay... He Reigns and Adoration were probably hte most decent on the album. Devotion, I thought, was better. They had catchy tunes, but the flaw was the covers... I wish they'd write original lyrics again... NO MORE COVERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So yeah... Boyz, go back to either the TMTYL or SUTTM era... PLEASE!!!

It's going to be interesting to see the effect their new guitarist will have on the sound of their next album.

My two favorite albums would be Going Public and Not Ashamed. Take Me To Your Leader was a great album as well, but there's just something about those other two.

There are actually a couple of good songs off of Hell Is For Wimps and Boys Will Be Boyz. Read All About It, however, sucks.

Hm. They sucked, they were great, and then they start sucking again.

Hopefully they'll be great again too.

~Jononly if their new guitarist has a REALLY big influence on the band;) seriously though- if they broke away from the k-love worship stuff they'd loose all their k-love fans, which apparently none of them post here:p

TAKE ME TO YOUR LEADER
Step up to the Microphone
Going Public

I stopped following Newsboys 3 years ago, so I can't make an informed judgement on Adoration, but I doubt it measures up to the old stuff.

Newsboys used to be my favorite band ever. I would equate them with U2 or the Beatles, but their new Cd stinks. "He Reigns" was good (maybe because of the repitition on radio) but ANYBODY CAN PLAY WORSHIP MUSIC. Let's see some good original music.

Take Me To Your Leader = :)
Step Up to the Microphone = :-/
Love Liberty Disco = :)
Thrive = :)
Adoration = :-/
Devotion = :nope:

Although, I will say that I enjoyed a lot of the worship-album songs in concert.

I thought Thrive was their best album by far. Then they dropped off the map in my opinion. I liked their covers of "In Christ Alone" and "Amazing Love" but the rest of Adoration was so plain. And I figured I would forgive them as long as it was a one-time thing. But alas, it was not. Devotion is pretty awful IMO.

To me, I don't even think of them any moresince they went all worship. I hope they go back to nrmal. I mean, I like alot of the worship songs, just I like the old schol stuff better.
