Take it for what it's worth from a rhythm guitarist/keyboardist/leader...

1. Be tasteful and respect the vocalists. As a lead (melody) part, you'll run into potential musical conflict with those singing the melody. Create around them, don't step on them.

2. Push the envelope in rehearsal just a bit, and check with the leader to see if there is approval for some/all of the wild stuff you just did...respect the leader's position on this, even if you don't agree with it.

3. Always know that it's not your show.

4. Practice outside of rehearsals and services. Make sure you're practicing good technique.

5. Practice your "touch" techniques, like harmonics, single-note fade-ins, and the like. This makes you versatile, much like the "drummer" who excels at light percussion as well...

Learn your major penitonic scale and which major key is relevant to the songs you play.

One thing that works well is to play leads as in solos at the end of songs as they build. You can also create riffs to play over the cords already established for the songs.

I have been doing this for three years and the most important thing is to remember that this is to worship God so if you are distracting you are just a harmful to the worship experience as some one talking in the crowd.

Peace and Love in Christ
