View Full Version : When bad praise band leaders happen to good musicians

I think that thread in itself says it all. Basically my praise band leader refuses to take the responsibilities of a praise band leader (i.e. organizing music ahead of time, showing up to practice early etc.) and it's wearing down me and the other musicians. My keyboardist and I were going to walk out last November but we didn't because of the youth pastor. THings improved for a couple weeks and now they suck again.
I want to keep on playing to God, but not when my leader sees praise band as a projection of himself. It's disgusting. Any suggestions? Also, keep this in mind. He takes everything personally...and I do mean everything. If the worship is bad he blames himself. If worship is good because myself or the keyboardist get dynamic to add some spunk and people are all in it he'll get mad for altering things and "running against" his "authority". Then he takes it out on our bass player and not on the keyboardist (they've been fighting for over a year so my praise leader is afraid of him) and he won't take it out on me because he sees me as an asset to keep the keyboardist in check...bleh. help me!

Well it seems quite hard. if it it is the way you say it is, then you got to speak with the guy, or maybe let your youth pastor speak with him. He has to know. Speak with him privatly if you will and maybe you tell him he should pray about or you should pray about it together. And pray for him, ask god to interfere and change the way he thinks. Ask the whole band to pray together and god will do his job.

Our worship leader is a gifted man, but his wife is a.... well I'm not going to say what she is, but you can figure it out. I decided to put it in God's hands, and now God is leading me into another youth group to lead worship. How awesome is that???

Well, he's taking two weeks off, and the rumor goes that he finally realized that he's not doing a good job so he'll probably be stepping out. Of course those are just rumors

You gotta be careful...
Sometimes God puts us in situations to test our faithfulness to him....
God allowed Satan to attack Job, and even his own wife said "Curse God and Die". But it was a test of faithfulness...
God works in mysterious ways.. His ways are higher than our ways. He might have a plan for you.....If you are as talented as you say you are (an asset), then God might be trying to shrink your EGO a little bit...
Or, He might be trying to develop a healthy relationship with your band......The Bible talks about the church being a body, and each member is a limb, or a part of the body that helps it function...There is only ONE head for the body..In church, this is known as the Pastor.. In music ministry, this is the leader, and no matter what the other members feel, or do, their job is to follow the leader, and if he fails, they all fail...But God has not placed this in your life for you to develop anger, or discontentment towards your fellow brother in Christ...
Have a heart to Heart, and if that doesn't work, pray, and seek God's face...He'll iron out all the details.
If you stay in God's will, and hold tight to His word (which is only found through the sacrifice of daily meditation and prayer), then He'll direct your path, and bring you out of your valley..
Keep the fire going, my friend..God will surely bring you out !!!!

Dudedude2, lemme tell you that when you wrote this thread, it did 2 things. One, it totally described me many moons ago. I mean what you labeled as your praise leader was exactly the way I was. I was very authorative, acting as if I was the best thing that graced God's green earth. Most of the band was fed up with my stupidity and arrogance, and they finally had a group meeting called, without me. The thing was, I was acting that way because I really didn't know anything about music (or playing for that matter) and I tried to over compensate that pitfall with another pitfall; over-doing my position. Thanks to God for not letting the band just blow up on me because that really would've been the end of music for me. We all sat down, talked about how I acted and made them feel, and we just had a long conversation on what we felt needed to happen. Truly, I believe God didn't want us to break up over something as stupid as my insecurities.
So I'm letting you know dudedude2, I've been in that situation. In fact, I'm the villian in your story. But the main thing that you that I hope you take into consideration is the person (in this case, the praise leader) has a reason for acting the way he/she does. When the reason is found, then you can start solving the problem.
Like I said, I 2 things happened when I read your thread. The second was a little prayer for you and your band because this is one of those pitfalls every band (I think) goes through. Either you can overcome sin with good or evil, and whatever you put in is what you get back.
Hope this helps and I will pray for you guys. :)
i've been thru times like these a few times....pray like crazy and increase you one-on-one time with Him. Satan REALLY ATTACKS HARD at worship leaders. Be gentle to your brother, he may have some negative spiritual influence hanging around (stuff like i'm the leader guy and this is MY band sort of thing...or problems with submitting to authority...)
I pray that the Lord would begin to show you and your bro's and sis's His plan in all this. I pray that when this situation is resolved, that a new, more intimate worship would flow out of the hearts of your people.
