View Full Version : Guitars?? Heavy??

You ever notice that guitar players always complain about how heavy certain guitars are? I think that all guitar players should be required to spend three hours straight with a bass made of swamp ash strapped to their back while they run around and do stuff. After that, no little guitar feels heavy!

I just have to laugh because my first bass was a Swamp Ash Monster of a bass. And I gigged with it from the beginning. Man, I pick up a Les Paul and think to myself, "Man this feels good! It's really light compared to a bass! I should play one of these." And I prolly would, but I like the SG's sound better and I don't even have the money for an SG b/c I'm a poor broke college student.

Amen. I love the feeling of a nice heavy, solid bass/guitar on my shoulders. Nothing else like it in the whole world.

I must be a wimp then, cause even with my acoustic, I like to sit while playing. Course, you guys dont ruck march twelve miles every week with 65 lbs on your backs either... its a tradeoff i s'pose.

No, that's true. When I was in highschool I used to go to school with a 45lb back pack every day though. Why, I don't know. I used to carry all my books, plus all my band stuff, plus all my art stuff, and then some extra stuff b/c I guess I liked the weight (I was an idiot). Everyone used to tease me about my big ol back pack cause it was so heavy, and then we weighed it one day. I don't do that anmore because it's stupid. I carry what I need and that's it. So, no... I don't ruck with 65 lbs... Thanks the good Lord! You haev an excuse. You may sit down! :)

Er, my guitar's thin body, that is.

When I bought a new acoustic/electric recently. I went with a thin body. Man, it's a breeze to handle.

I thought my fender strat was heavy. I frequently fall asleep while playing my guitar, and a guitar resting on your stomach can be heavy.

Well, not really. There is a rule against resurrecting an old thread if, like, you wrote it and it is a pet thread that you just wanted to see at the top of the queue again, for kicks.

But if the topic is still pertinant, germaine, and relevant, and you bring value to it, then, yes, you can post to it.

Just don't resurrect thru pointless, cheap posting.

A nice wide strap does wonders. My guitars are all pretty light, I can't really complain.

First, Swamp Ash is actually one of the lighter woods out there, it isnt particularly dense. Anyway, my Acrylic Mockingbird (the only guitar I have that I complain about weight) weighs about 15-20 lbs, try playing with that on a gig jumping around. As georgeo mentioned, a wide strap distributes the weight more evenly and can really effect the perception of weight. Also if a guitar is balenced correctly can greatly effect it as well. Gibson guitars especially are known for being neck heavy a lot of times, which ads a lot of strain.

haha, go from playing a swamp ash p-bass (pretty heavy) to a solid mohagany les paul. There's a slight difference. The p-bass is heavy. The les paul makes you want to have a double-shoulder strap. :D

I refuse to believe that Les Pauls are heavy. All the other guitars are just light. :yep:

Any of you ever hold an original 1958 Les Paul custom for three hours?

It's a great way to develop serious back problems!

Heavy is good, I can't stand a light guitar.

ahh, I love my good ol' p-bass, it is just right, when I learned to play bass I had a harmony p-bass copy. I was about 10 years old and that thing was about twice as thick as my p-bass... it about killed me, but it built me up too. soI like a good solid feeling guitar... when I hold an ibanez bass it drives me crazy are those things hollow bodies or something? I can't stand the way a danelectro feels either.

While in the local music store last weekend, I saw a guy picking up his bass from the shop wizard. It was an older Cramer (Kramer?) bass with a forked head and the thickest body I've ever seen. The neck was an aluminum casting- talk about weight!

He loved his bass, but did mention that it was good for only about one song on stage before his shoulder gave out. :nope: Great sustain though.

Dang grrrl!!!!! How tall are you? That LP looks huge on you!I'm 5ft even.

It looked pretty big on Phil, too.

Weight aside, that is an incredible guitar. The owner is a mutual friend and had to sell it recently :(. I would've happily bought it if I'd had the money! I would've just had to play it sitting down :D!

Yeup...that's a heavy guitar alright; I gave it back after a few minutes, and my back is steel reinforced! That particular show ended without an encore because Phil had severe back pain. Gee, I can't imagine why...I didn't see the bass player straining under his old Fender....

 I wouldn't mind if he was in WA everyday... hehe...Yeah, but I'm sure he would. He gets anxious when he's in the same town more than one night in a row--he'd much rather be home with his family. Frankly, I wouldn't mind if he came to Iowa once a year but I doubt it will ever happen!

Yup, lots of pins and wires and rods and screws holding it together. Geez, Steph is like superwoman. She's even got connections [which I envy :D]Sorry, no giant "S" on my shirt (no red tights either!). Bionic woman might be a bit closer, but no super powers. No connections here. They end up being more trouble than they're worth.

BTW, you can hear that Paul here:
