I've got a Squire P-bass and it's had some problems. For one, it's got a grounding problem, so it makes this infernal buzz whenever you let go of the strings. That's just my bass though..
On the plus side it has an ok sound (when it's not buzzing).
If your going to stick with playing the bass (or already play), you might consider getting something a little bit higher in quality. You would definately want to check out some kind of bass with a P-pickup for the music your playing. Maybe an Ibanez or a mexican fender? Abit more cash to shell out, but well worth it.
Basically it boils down to this: You get what you pay for. If I'd had know this I would've gone with something better.
Just my two cents worth.

I second drummin, I got one thinking it would be alright. It buzzed, the second week the knobs fell off, the neck bent real bad pretty quikly. After about 4 months I couldnt take it anymore and got a new bass. Just my experiance, and I didn't enjoy it too much. Enjoy playing bass though

They arn't bad, there are plenty of options in that price range, though. Shop used if posible! You can get a better products for less money.

That "Fender buzz" is present in most Fender basses. A good shielding job is important, and will help cut down on the buzz, but it will always be there to some extent.

hmm...sounds like you guys got the wrong squire p-bass. looks like i got the sweet one, color kinda bugs me but it sounds awesome. low buzz, good tone, and it has one of the most comfortable five string necks i've played, i love my baby.:D and unlike christosapien, mine is fully intact and still goin strong after a year or so...

I have had the same problem with the buzzing on my squier P-bass. I think it's the ground that's messed up. I just popped off the pickguard, resolder it and all the buzzing is gone. Rather simple actaully. Another smart thing i did was put new strings on it. Because the stock strings are pretty bad. I bought elixers, there nice, they make the picks-ups sound a lot better too.

Can you save more money? While the Squire may be "only" $150, you will probably want to step up to a better bass fairly soon after you start playing (or maybe not, I played the same Peavey P-Bass for a long time). Go to MARS or where ever and try as many basses as you can, ignoring the prices. This will give you a reference point as to what you really want. Basicly, just play every bass you can, anywhere you find them (music stores, pawn shops, etc.), untill you find the right one. If you can't afford it, then find a bass that has the same feel and close to the same sound as the bass you want.
Most companies have a "budget" line, like Yamaha, Ibanez, Fender (Squire), and others. A company like Samick builds basses for lots of campanies, who just relabel them and sell them. So sometimes, a "no name" bass can turn out pretty good.

My bro loves the $300 Ibanez I bought for him. Think its the GSR200.

I filled in with a worship band one time when their bass player didn't show up. I played a Squire P-Bass that belonged to the lead singer's son. I was actually quite surprised at the feel and the sound. They have had this bass for about two years now and they don't seem to have any problems with it. With these low end import basses though, the quality is inconsistant. You can see this by reading the previous post in this thread where some people have no problems while others do.
I agree with Lee, try out as many basses as you can, find out what you like then find something in your price range that is closest to that. I'd also say to take along with you (if you can) an experienced guitar/bass player to look over the instrument for defects and poor craftmanship.
Also, if you can save up more money before you buy, your options will increase.
Peace!

i went to the new music-go-round and tried out basses today after school. i tried a Squier P-J Deluxe, a Cort P-bass with no fretboard, a Wasburn P, and an Ibanez P-J. and ended up buying the Ibanez, it sounded and felt the best, it was just a little more than i wanted to spend, $170. so now i owe my dad 25 bucks but its all good cause its a sweet bass. thanks for all your help guys.
