Tabbed by Kirk Bozeman (

This is pretty much everything you need to know to play this

E-flat tuning

h = hammer on
p = pull off
/ = "slide"
^ = pitch bend

Verse pattern:

Chorus (and intro) pattern:

Bridge: Octave notes (on A and G strings) written only. Mute
the D-string
and strum across all strings. 12 written after an octave
denotes that the
octave is played above the 12th fret.

D F# E A12 Ab G

D F# E A12 Ab F#

B12 C#12 A12 Ab

D F# E F# D E C# D

If there's poetry
In God's mystery
It's in the way he reveals
It's in the way he reveals
Himself to me

So you'll believe when you see
I say you won't see 'til you believe
Thomas said, until I see these hands, the print of the nails
Until I stick my fingers in the print of the nails
I won't believe

Thomas saw the nailholes
Thomas saw the nailholes

Thomas saw the nailholes
Thomas saw the nailholes

Do we need the nailholes?
Do we need the nailholes?

I don't need the nailholes
I don't need the nailholes

So I tabbed this song a really, really long time ago, and it's really wrong. There's no way anyone could play the song this way. It's actually in an alternate tuning, which is as follows:

As with any BES/ME song, start with E-flat tuning: Eb Ab Db Gb Bb eb.

Then, tune the Eb, Bb, and eb down a whole step and tune the Gb UP a whole step. The final tuning should be: Db Ab Db Ab Ab db.

It's sort of a modified DADGAD flatted, if that idea helps anyone. The song is built around the open chord created by the alternate tuning and mirrors somewhat my "earlier work" on this tab, so the old tab may help. I doubt you'll want to try this on an acoustic, unless you like spending lots of money on strings.

Also, I have a very strong feeling "Adrien James" (for sure) and some of the other BES songs are in this tuning as well. And, if you are actually reading this, I am amazed that here in 2005 you listen to BES/ME and want to play this song, so e-mail me at just to let me know.

So I actually checked this last comment with the "Miles Davis" EP, and the tuning is correct except that he capoes the 2nd fret for both this song and for Adrien James. I haven't checked it against "Way Before the Flood", but I'm sure it's the same.
