even if you dont change E to Em it still sounds good but when I played it, Em DID sound better, but before I even thought to play Em, E sounded just fine. I think it's just a matter of preference.
The reason it can't be an E major chord is because that chord is not in the key of C which is the key that this song is notated in. The correct chord is the Em. It's not just a personal preference, it's a musical rule. There are exceptions, but this song is not one of them. If you want an example of an exception, e-mail me at BBro86@myway.com
The "EM - Em" chord you are referring to is not an "E" chord at all. I believe it is called an "Asus7".
Relative to capo:
e - x
b - 3
g - 0
d - 2
a - 0
E - x
If you listen closely on when they play this chord on the rest of this song the bass player is playing an "A". Hope this helps. Great song, use it all the time for worship.

This song is notated first of all in the key of G, not C. Em would be the relative chord to G which makes sense for Em to be there.
